the ones i remember are:
king louie - monkey
mowgli - the "man cub"
bahloo - bear
ka - the snake
shir-kan - the tiger
colnel hardy - elephant
bakira - panther
No, they weren't. They were from Rudyard Kipling's "Jungle Book".
Once it was completely out of copyright, Disney moved in and made a
disgustingly bowdlerized movie.
Try the Real Thing. Kipling!
Don't miss the Just So Stories, also by Kipling. How the elephant got
its trunk, the cat that walks by itself, why rhinocerous's skins are so
wrinkly, where the alphabet came from,.... Kipling wrote them for his
daughter.

I was a Jungle Book fanatic when I was a kid, so permit me to nit-pick
on the spellings. These also from memory so I hope I don't embarrass
myself. It's probably been 20 years since I read it:
Baloo -- bear
Kaa -- snake (was there an apostrophe in there?)
Shere Khan -- tiger
Bagheera -- panther
I was so offended by Disney's coming out with a cartoon version that I
refused to ever see it -- still haven't, though my dudgeon has faded.
In the book I don't think the elephants, which were minor characters,
had names. The monkeys were collectively called the Bander-Log and
were objects of great scorn to the "decent" jungle folk. I don't
recall any alligators.
I recommend the original, whose official title is "Rudyard Kipling's
First Jungle Book", I believe, as a wonderful story. Of course it is
somewhat racist and sexist, so if that will offend you too much, watch
out.

A nitpick on the elephant's name: in the movie it was Colonel Hathi.
As you say, the elephants don't appear in a major way in the book.

Don't forget the "Second Jungle Book". It has more of the Mowgli
stories, and a number of other animal tales as well. Since my copy of
"The Jungle Book" is an edition (printed by Penguin) which contains
all of the stories of both the First and Second Jungle Books, I can't
give you any details on which stories you will find in the Second
book, but I certainly recommend reading both parts.

Baloo is the bear, Shere Kahn is the tiger, Rama is Mowgli's wolf-father,
and Bagheera is the panther.

I hate to tell you this, but Rikki-Tikki-Tavi was not in the movie of
"The Jungle Book", and was not a character in the Mowgli stories.
Rikki-Tikki-Tavi was, however, the title character in one of the
non-Mowgli in the book.
