I was at the grocery today comparing Gerber and Heinz First foods and I was
wondering which brands you all preferred (I haven't looked at Beech-Nut yet).
Eventually we'll be making our own baby food, but due to time constraints
we're sticking with pre-made stuff. I noticed that Heinz tends to be lower
in sodium, higher in calories and higher in vitamins and minerals than Ger-
ber. It is also cheaper, which makes me wonder. Can it actually be better
all around AND cheaper? Is it better to be slightly higher in calories - like
puppy food?

I hope this won't generate the same kind of flame war the CTTD(36yo) post did.
I would just like some general information and advice. Thanks in advance.

My wife and I went went Heinz and Beech-Nut wherever possible, to the
exclusion of Gerber. Gerber is the brand, if you will recall, that sold
sugar-water and called it apple juice about 10 years ago...

It's also true that Heinz sells more offerings without added sugar than
Gerber (we checked).

I liked Beechnut because it had no additives, just water and whatever
fruit/veggie. Heinz was my second choice. I only used Gerber once, in
an "emergency".

I liked the variety that Gerber had, but was not impressed with Gerber
customer service, so didn't use Gerber as much. I was just starting
bananas with Kevin and had bought some Gerber. I opened them and they
were awful!! The smell was horrendous!!! I quickly opened all four jars
and they all smelled the same. I called the customer service # on the
jar. They apologized and said they would send me coupons to replace the
jars. They did. But I had also called Beechnut to ask them about the
smell in bananas, theirs did not smell as bad. They answered my questions
and said they would send me coupons. Boy did they!!! I was very
impressed. So I used a lot of Beechnut.

Kathleen-
We use Earth's Best baby food which is made with all organic foods- no
additives, preservatives or pesticides. It's basically baby "health" food.
And Caroline loves it!

I could never get either of my kids to even eat Gerber, when
I tried it. Both my kids ate Earth's Best - a little more
expensive but you can tell the difference as soon as you
open the jar. It smells like real food - it isn't thin
and runny like other jarred foods - and it comes in a
great variety of flavors, like Pears and Raspberries, and
Spinach and Potato, as well as a ton of dinner combinations.

Spencer still gets the occasional jar at 12 mos. and he
still refuses to eat any other brand. So did Ben as a baby...

We fed our daughter Heinz baby foods, mainly because we were both
poor students and Heinz was far cheaper than Gerber. Since both
brands are pretty much additive free, I can't see that there would
be a lot of difference, at least for the fruits and veggies. (Our
daughter refused to eat the jarred meats, so we never used those.)
At any rate, our daughter grew up perfectly happy and healthy.

We used virtually strictly Gerber, and went through tons of it, as our kids
ate mostly baby food from ages 6 months to 15 months. I don't know which
food is better, but our kids loved the Gerber.

I have never heard of this brand. Is it jarred? Or frozen? Who makes
it? Where is it made? Etc???? I did use a lot of the Growing Healthy
frozen baby food. Kevin did prefer it, but then he has never really been
a fussy eater and will eat most anything. I don't know if that is good or
bad. Kevin no longer eats baby food, but I would like to know for future
reference.

It is made by Earth's Best. It is jarred. It's made just down the street
from the Otter Creek Brewing Company (no connection!) in Middlebury, Vermont.
Our daughter really liked it. I've seen it on sale at the local natural health
food store. Don't recall if I've seen it in the supermarket. We liked it
because it was made about 10 miles from where we live. Not sure if there are
other places it is made. They have an 800 number for consumer information:
1-800-442-4221.

(Rumor also has it that the movie "Baby Boom" (I think) was about the start
up.)

Well, I called the number myself and things have changed. They no longer make
the food in Middlebury, but it is now made in California. The company is
now headquartered in Boulder, Colorado. Guess they got to big for Vermont!

Someone asked about Earth's Best baby food. It is jarred, and it isn't
sold everywhere yet. It is made in Vermont and California. If it isn't
in your grocery store, you can find it at General Nutrition (GNC) in
some states. It's good! [The only reason I know this stuff is because my
husband works for them.]

They are getting ready to introduce a line of toddler foods, which are
like baby food with chunks. [fruits and stuff]

Jessica loves it!
