The other day, Susan had spent a great deal of time getting Scott to bed.
Finally she was satisfied that he was on his way to Dreamland by himself,
after holding his hand, leaving the room, and coming back to check a few
times. I guess he was feeling mature and independent, because I happened
to pass by the room 15 minutes later, and of course stopped at the doorway
to look in. From the darkness came a brave little voice: "I'm sleeping. Go!"

One night my seven year old son Brian was drawing and coloring at the
table, and my sister (25) sat and joined him. After a while Brian
looked at what his aunt had done and said "That's pretty good for a
girl..." My sister gave him a suitably dirty look, so he rephrased
his statement: "Oh, sorry. That's pretty good for a woman..." :-)

Please, no flames about stereotypes. He couldn't have gotten that
from me or anyone else in my family, and my mother (his grandmother)
is a very good artist. Must be other kids at school...

My son absolutely loves to have his back tickled or drawn on with my finger.
When I was growing up I knew a rhyme used while drawing on/tickling the back,
but I can't remember the whole thing. Can anyone fill in the blanks for me?
This was guaranteed to create major goosebumps.

Here's what I remember:

We're going on a treasure hunt (draw a big circle on the back)
X marks the spot (draw an x inside the circle)

something about a circle and a dot?

something something something....

Up snake hill (draw a wiggly line up the spine)
Down snake hill (draw wiggly line down the spine)
Snaaaaaaaake BITE (surprise with a "snake bite" somewhere on back)

something something something....

A breeze (a breath of air on the neck)
And a squeeze (a gentle squeeze on the neck)

Thanks,
- Brenda

Heres how we do it (came from my wifes family).

Going on a treasure hunt (squigley line down spine)
X marks the spot (big x)
dot dot dash dash question mark (..-- on and accross lower shoulder area)

Spiders crawling up your back (crawl up back with all fingers)
Blood trickling down (lightly slide down with all fingers)

With a wind (blow on neck)
and a squeeze (squeeze shoulder area)
it'll make you freeze

Tickle up.
Tickle down.
A tropical breeze.
And a slight squeeze.

Actions:

Draw a circle on the back
Draw and X
Repeat circle and dot the center
Tickle up the back,
Tickle down the back
Blow on the neck
Slightly squeeze the neck

(Guaranteed to send chills up your spine).

When I was in grade school, we did something similiar on friends backs while
waiting in a line at school (or my brother/friends etc would take turns)
Ours went like this :

criss-cross (large X drawn on back -- slowly)
applesauce (movement all over the back with hands)
spiders crawling up the wall (fingers walking up the back)
cool breeze (a breath of air on the neck)
light squeeze (gentle squeeze ont the neck)

I may have missed some part of this :-) Boy did this bring back memories!!

We call it X marks the spot, and my kids love to be woken this way.

The tune as I remember it is:

X mark the spot with a dot and an dot
and a dash and a dash and a BIG Question mark!!

(Big X on the back , and two quick dots on each side of the back...
A line up each the left side then on the right side, end with a huge
question mark on the entire back.

With upsies and downsies and all aoundsies...with a squeeze
and a cool autumn breeze...

(Squigley line up the back and down the back and then squiglys all
around the back, then squeeze the back of the neck and blow on it)

Thats how I was doing it for years...Its one of the things that I never
new anyone else doing...

I'd love to hear about more of them...My son is 12 and still gets a kick
out of me doing it to him...

Brendas rendition sounds neat too, I hope someone fills hers in. I'd like
to try it.

When I was a kid, we did the treasure hunt thing, although I don't
remember our version very well.

Two related things I remember enjoying:

THE CRACKED EGG: Sit behind someone. Cup one hand on top of the
person's head. Say "Here's the egg. Now, we crack it." Push down
on your cupped hand with the other, making a cracking sound as you
do. Then "dribble" your fingers all the way down the person's head.

THE ROPE: This is sort of a hypnotism game. Slowly rub someone's
back, telling them to concentrate on your voice. Then push gently
but firmly into the middle of the back with one hand and say, "Now
I'm attaching the rope to you. It will never come off, no matter
how hard I pull. Now I'm going to wind it up." Make spiral motions
slowly out from this point, saying "I'm winding...I'm winding..."
all the time. Then say "Now I'm going to unwind the rope." Reverse
the winding, saying "I'm unwinding" as you do. Finally, say, "Now
the rope's completely unwound. Now I'm pulling....I'm pulling harder...
harder...harder..."

If you've got your subject sufficiently hooked, he'll fall backwards.

My parents had a tickle rhyme coming from the front for us:

Gonna bore a hole <circling finger in front of the intended victim>
But i don't know where
Guess i'll bore it
RIGHT IN THERE! <quick gentle poke to belly button, then tickle
away!>

Don't have any kids of my own to try it out on yet, but i know i enjoyed it.
I can also guarantee it gets husbands out of bed on Saturday mornings ;-)

Three tropical islands
dot dot dot (make 3 dots on back, sort of upside down triangle shape)
A spider crawling up (crawl up back with all fingers)
The blood gushing down (lightly slide down with all fingers)
Here comes a tropical breeze (blow on neck)
Gotcha! (squeeze shoulder area)

Does anyone else remember it this way?

I learned a similar tickle rhyme from my husband.
The way his family said it was:

X marks the spot
with a dot and a dot

a dash and a dash

and a big question mark

upsies and downsies
and all aroundsies
pinches and squeezes
and warm desert breezes

You can substitute "and cool ocean breezes" for the last line, depending on
the temperature of your breath I suppose. I think what really makes this
poem is the way you say it, including volume and meter. My husband says
it very softly and slowly, almost at a whisper. Pause quite a bit between
every phrase or action (e.g. after upsies or pinches) while you continue
touching, and draw out certain words such as "big" and "all". (It can also
be quite sexy to use it on SO's, more as a massage rhyme than a tickle
rhyme.)

I remember a vastly different version, which I learned in Jr. High:

X marks the spot. (make an X on the back)
Two bullet holes. (use thumbs to make 'bullet holes' on shoulder blades)
Blood trickling down. (hands emulate blood going down the back)
A cool summer breeze. (blow gently on the neck)
STRANGLED !! (This must be done suddenly, without person expecting it.
Pretend to strangle the person, but be GENTLE!)

A back rhyme which I LOVED as a child:

Mousey-mousey went up the stairs,
To hear little Linda say her prayers,
And if little Linda didn't say them right,
Mousey-Mousey would come and BITE, BITE, BITE, BITE ...

Mousey-Mousey went down the stairs,
He just heard Linda say her prayers,
Little Linda said them right,
So Mousey-Mousey didn't have to BITE, BITE, BITE, BITE ...

(During each line, a spider walks up the back. At the beginning of each
line, the spider is at the waist, and by the end the spider is at the neck.
When you get to BITE, BITE..., you "tickle-pinch" all over the back. For
the 2nd verse, go down the back instead of up.)

When I was a kid, I sometimes changed the 2nd verse:

Mousey-Mousey went down the stairs,
He just heard Linda say her prayers,
Little Linda said them wrong,
So Mousey-Mousey had to KABONG, BONG, BONG ...

(Remember QuickDraw McGraw when he played El Kabong? On the back, the
KABONG was GENTLE fist 'pounding' the back)

Ah, the memories !!!!

Eeeech!

Well, I've got a 4 year old. Mayge it gets different in the teens.
The version my wife taught me to that is:

X marks the spot
With a dot ...
And a dot ...
And a dash ...
And a dash ...

And along comes a tropical breeeeeeze!

The version of this rhyme I knew growing up was,
Going on a treasure hunt,
(while waking fingers up back.)
X marks the spot,(draw a big X)
Dot dot dot dot dot,
(Poke gently for each dot)
Here comes the snake, bite you on the neck,
(Run hands up back then squeeze neck)
There goes the blood, all falls down,
(Run hands gently down back)
(This part done twice)
Tight squeeze,
(Squeeze both sides)
Cold breeze
(Blow on back)
Now you got the shivereeze.
(Tickle back lightly)
