Alex (almost 16 months) has started bringing us his board books to read. His
favorite is the one with pictures of farm animals. I read the book saying things
like "the cow says moo!", etc. My husband and I are stuck on what the goat says!
Here are the animals in the book, and what they say in American-English:

Chicken: Bawk, bawk, ... (or cluck, cluck)
Pig: Oink, oink
Dog: Woof, woof (or bow wow)
Cat: Meow
Duck: Quack, quack
Donkey: Hee Haw
Cow: Moo!
Horse: Neigh
Goats: ???
Sheep: Baa, baa
Rooster: Cockadoodledoo!! (Alex's favorite!)

So, what does a goat say? What do these animals from other countries say??

Goats (American ones, anyway) say Maaa. But what I want to know is, what
do hippopotamuses say? How about flamingoes? Not that it matters. If
Daniel doesn't know the right sound, he'll make one up. A friend of mine
taught her 15-mo-old to scrunch up her nose at a picture of a bunny. Oh
yeah - how about guinea pigs? The inquiring mind of my son wants to know.

Guinea pigs make a distinctive gutteral squeak. I had a friend in
high school who could do it perfectly--I'm not nearly as talented.

Goats bleat like sheep, but with an M: Maaa!
Oliver also enjoys what fish say (they open & close their mouths silently)
and what squirrels say (that tsking sound I don't know how to write).
Other favourites:
Lions & tigers (roar)
Owls (Hoo-hoo)
Blue Jays (Thief!) or alternatively, Play ball! :-)
Monkeys (Ee-ee)
Snakes (Sssss)

What other animal sounds do people have?

Hey, what about "bleat bleat"? That's what they say in
_Fiddle-I-Fee_. But the pig says "griffy-gruffy," the hen says
"chipsy-chopsy," and the goose says "swishy-swashy," so I'm not
sure I trust her. :-) Still, "bleat" seems reasonable.

Rabbits actually scream when frightened. Guinea pigs make a
very high pitched sound like "ree ree".

It's interesting that different languages attribute different sounds
to animals. I recall that a number of animal soundings are different
in French, but I forgot what they are.

As a previous owner of guinea pigs, I know what they say. And they say
it every time you open the refrigerator. "weeeeet" "weeeeeeet"
"Weeeeet" "WEEEEEET" "*WEEEEET*" "***WEEEEEEEEET***"

I think goats say "bleat", too.

They have this at my son's daycare and the kids love it, as it shows
a small boy trying to go fishing, but there's a number of animals

It must depend on the frog. That sounds like a great transcription
of what I've heard some very loud frogs say! Less emphasis on the
first syllable, though. I've also heard a very shrill "peep-peep-peep-
peep", from a completely different species.

Will has the video 'Farm Animals (up close and very personal)'. The donkey
on that video was a revelation to me (the first syllable of "hee-haw"
is said on the in-breath, hoarsely). The turkey was a surprise, too--
the way most folks say "gobble-gobble" bears no resemblance to what
I hear on the tape, although you can say it much more realistically.
(This is a really great tape!)

Earlier in this thread someone mentioned what animals say in other
languages. In French, roosters say "co-cu-REE-co". That's a lot closer
to what I've heard from roosters than "cock-a-doodle-doo" ever could
be.

Peter Spier's book "Gobble Growl Grunt" has pages of nothing but animals
making their sounds. It ends with a page of animals that make no sounds
at all, such as giraffes, spiders, and tortoises. (Hint: the only way to
survive Spier's books is to pronounce only what the child actually points
to, instead of trying to read everything. Otherwise you just get
exhausted.)

In the Netherlands our animals say:

Chicken: Tok tok
Pig: Knor knor
Dog: Woef woef (sounds like woof)
Cat: Miauw (sounds like miauw)
Duck: Kwak, kwak
Donkey: Ia (sounds like meow)
Cow: Boeh (sounds like booh)
Horse: Hihihihi (sounds like hee hee hee hee)
Goats: Beh, beh
Sheep: Beh, beh
Rooster: Kukeleku

Since we play this game with our son we are wondering about the
sounds of animals like giraffes, zebra's, hedgehogs, crocodiles,
rabbits, etc. Any one knowing these or other less trivial animal
sounds?

Karen.

Just what *does* a giraffe say? or a fishie? or a chair? Grace is very
insistent and is not happy when I say "I don't know" or try to make up a sound.
She does like it when I put my hands on either side of my face, purse my lips

Now, we play a new game on the way home...

She says "I'm hungry!"

I say "Hoooow about some lizard lips (or puppy dog tails, or whatever) for

Grace says "I like lizard lips (or puppy dog tails or whatever)!"

Couldn't resist the temptation to join this thread with the Hebrew version.
I thought Hebrew animal sounds were pretty unique, until I saw the Netherlands
version here. Still, here's what animals in Israel say:

Chicken: kod-kod-koda (or bok-bok-bok)
Dog: hav-hav
Cat: meeow
Duck: gaa, gaa
Donkey: ee-ahh
Cow: moo
Horse: hee-hee-hee (rapidly)
Sheep: me'e'ehh
Rooster: kukuriku
Bird: tsif-tsif (or tzvitz-tzvitz)
Pig: [Sorry, not Kosher ;) ]
Frog: Qua, qua (or kvah, kvah)

*Giraffes* are actually mute, as far as I know.

Rather a silly first post to this newsgroup, but hi everyone! LOVE this
newsgroup, lots of info and lowest percentage of flames I've ever seen on the
net. Great.
