Satanism and Occult-Ritual Activity: Questions and Answers
How Prevalent are Satanism and other Occult-Related Activities?
No reliable scientific data can tell us how many people are
involved, but a most disturbing trend has been the apparent increased
interest among the young.
What are the Different Levels of Involvement?
1. "Dabblers," usually teenagers who become attracted to Satanism
on a relatively superficial level through easily-available books,
heavy-metal music, fantasy role-playing games and the like;
2. "self-styled" or "psychopathic" Satanists, usually loners
attracted to the more violent forms of satanism which are then grafted
onto their pre-existing pathology;
3. "religious" Satanists involved in well-organized, publicly-
acknowledged groups such as the Church of Satan or Temple of Set, and
4. "satanic cults," the sophisticated, clandestine groups which may
be engaged in criminal activities. These categories overlap.

Commentary on Borawick v. Shay: The Fate of Hypnotically Retrieved
Memories - Alan W. Scheflin, Esq. Cultic Studies Journal, 1996,
Volume 13, Number 1, pages 26-41
Abstract - The Federal Court of Appeals for the Second Circuit's
decision in Borawick v. Shay correctly applied the "totality-of-the-
circumstances" test to the admissibility of hypnotically refreshed
testimony in federal courts. The court was incorrect, however, in
denying the plaintiff, Ms. Borawick, her day in court to prove her
allegations of repressed memories of childhood sexual abuse. Some
overly cautious experts in hypnosis and in repressed memory have
presented to courts information about these subjects that cannot
withstand scientific scrutiny. The current scientific literature
demonstrates the truth of the following assertions: (1) hypnosis, when
used properly, does not inevitably contaminate or alter memory, (2)
hypnosis, when used properly, can assist in the recovery of memories
that later can be corroborated as true, (3) repressed memory, or
dissociative amnesia, has been verified as real in every study of the
issue, and (4) scientific studies so far support the conclusion that
repressed memories are no less accurate than always remembered
memories.

False Memory and Buridan's Ass: A Response to Karlin and Orne - Alan
W. Scheflin, Esq. Cultic Studies Journal, 1997, Volume 14, Number 2,
pages 207-289 Abstract - According to the Karlin and Orne position
supporting the per se exclusion rule for hypnotized witnesses, a
person who has been lobotomized can testify in court, a person who has
received massive electroshock treatments can testify in court, a
person who has taken enormous dosages of mind-altering psychiatric
drugs or psychedelics can testify in court, a person who has suffered
substantial organic brain damage can testify in court; but a person
who had been competently hypnotized by an experienced licensed
professional who carefully followed strict guidelines to avoid undue
suggestions, cannot testify in court. This paper rejects the Karlin
and Orne position support-ing per se exclusion on scientific and
policy grounds; and it argues that the currently prevailing expert
opinion of forensic hypnosis specialists, in the United States and
abroad, also rejects the per se exclusion. In addition, this paper
argues that Karlin and Orne are mistaken in their conclusions that (1)
hypnosis always contaminates memory, (2) repressed memory does not
exist, (3) there is a recognized practice or school of thought called
"recovered memory" therapy, and (4) multiple personality disorder
(MPD) or dissociative identity disorder (DID) is always iatrogenic.
