A couple of questions for Lion King experts:

1) What kind of bird is Zazu?

2) What is his title? When they have the run in with the hyenas he
tells them: "I am the King's __________!". What the heck is that word.

I'm really not certain what species of bird Zazu is. Looks like a
combination of several, frankly.

As for his title, as far as what he said to the hyenas, he referred to
himself as the king's "Major Domo", a fairly officious sounding title
which is more or less the equivalent of "Trusted Right-Hand (paw!?) Man
(or bird, as the case may be)."

NO idea on the first one, but I believe he says he is the king's "Major
Dodo", a play on the phrase "Major Domo (Sp?).

Simba refers to him as a "hornbill"

I am too lazy to go check out the video to find out. I think he says
"majordomo"

Zazu is a hornbill, although some GREAT artistic license has been
taken in his portrayal (hornbills aren't anywhere NEAR that
colorful). Simba mentions this in "I Can't Wait To Be King":

"Kings don't need advice from little hornbills for a start!"

He looks like a toucan, but I would ask the rec.arts.disney group for a
specific answer.

He is the King's Majordomo. :-) The right hand bird, so to speak.

I think Zazu in a hronbill. At least that is what Simba calls him in "I Just
Can't Wait to be King." I actually watched the video last night with my
daughter and Zazu calls himself the King's Major Dodo. (BTW my daughter know
all of the words to the entire movie by heart!!)

No idea on #1 either but I am certain he says "major domo" which we had to
look up right away! It means the head steward of a large household, such
as a palace or a person who speaks, makes arrangements or takes charge for
another. And that pretty much describes Zazu to a tee!

Imagine -- a fun movie AND an education! Don't you just love Disney? :)

You folks clearly haven't seen the video ten zillion times--remember
Simba's line in Can't Wait to be King: 'Kings don't need advice from
little HORNBILL's for a start...' :o) :o) :o)

I did see a story on the Lion King characters somewhere that pointed
to Zazu as the one who looks the least like what he's supposed to
be...

Ah...but you haven't seen it *ten* zillion times :o) --as others have
posted, Zazu is a hornbill & a *majordomo* (n. the head steward or
butler in the household of a sovereign or great nobleman).

I think you're right. I know Simba refers to him as a hornbill; but
also, just out of curiosity I looked up a dodo bird in the dictionary.
It is a large, flightless bird that has, apparently, been extinct since
the 17th century. [American Heritage Dictionary]

On the other hand, the picture of the hornbill in the same dictionary
looks a *lot* like Zazu, although the definition given in the dictionary
doesn't indicate if they are found in Africa.

BTW, I know there is a trivia newsgroup, but I really enjoy the
occasional trivia that pops up in misc.kids!

I'm no expert on the Lion King, but from living in South Africa for 20 years
I can tell you with great confidence that Zazu is a hornbill. They are medium-
sized to large birds that usually live in thornveld and have large,
heavy-looking oversized beaks; they eat grubs and things though I think, they
definitely aren't birds of prey. If I had my bird book here I could probably
tell you his species :-) Wasn't the Lion King animation wonderful?

I was at the zoo the other day, and to my surprise there was Zazu!
Yes, he is a hornbill and let me tell you, they don't look all that
friendly either. The way that bird used his beak, it looked downright
dangerous!
