Hello, Jamie!!! I'm not sure if you remember me, but I'm still lurking
around and I just noticed your name in the Cox/Arquette thread!!! I'm so
happy you are still in the woodwork! How have you been?

I had a look at your pictures of Taylor. Absolutely unbelievable! She is one
of *THE* most beautiful babies I have EVER seen. She is GORGEOUS!!! How can
you ever stop kissing her in time to take pictures?!?!?!?! I'm sorry but
that little gap between her 2 front teeth just makes me want to melt!!! I
love it!

Your family picture is the Santa hats is awesome, Jamie. You must be so
proud!!

I'm so happy that you are enjoying your little Taylor. You absolutely
deserve everything she has given you so far and all that she will give you
in the future!

-K.

Kara,
Thanks so much for the post, and the compliments. She is rather adorable,
and it's hard to stop kissing on her. We've decided to take advantage of
her great personality and photogenic status, and have actually signed her up
with a modeling agency, and gotten her working...as I always say, better her
than me. She's done about 6 jobs, Target, Macy's, Mervyns (twice), Hanna
Andersson (she'll be in the summer catalog, go to the website and sign up
for catalog delivery now) and LeapFrog. If they use the LeapFrog photo,
she'll be on the box of the toy that she played with during the shoot -- a
stuffed caterpillar that attaches to crib or stroller, sometime next fall.

She actually got her first paycheck last week...it wasn't much, even though
it was for 2 jobs, but it's pretty cool, and it'll go into a savings account
for her college fund. It's a heck of a lot of work for me, what with
traffic, schlepping to and fro, etc, but really interesting, and she really
seems to enjoy it. She's such a ham, and smiles for the camera...the
photographers just love working with her!

Her first ad is supposed to come out January 25th, in the Sunday Paper, an
ad for Mervyns (I think). I don't know if it's a national campaign -- it
would probably run in any city/state that has Mervyns in it. Check your
local papers on the 25th, and I'll try to scan it in and post if they run
it.

Anyway Kara, thanks for the "Hi" and it's good to be checking in.

Sorry for the top post, I'm lazy. Just out of curiosity what do these jobs
pay. I have a rather beautiful child (and no that is not just my opinion!)
as well and was contemplating doing the same thing. It may be a little bit
more difficult for me in Canada though. I thought it might be nice to have
some extra cash to put away towards college.

If you do not want to post this in the NG please email me at nadene ann at

Thanks

Nadene,
No, I don't mind posting about it here...if anyone doesn't want to read
about it, they can just delete it!

Taylor makes anywhere from $75-$150 per hour -- which sounds good except for
the fact that babies can only work about an hour at a time, give or take, so
it really ends up being about $75-100 per day of work, on average. Plus,
the modeling agency takes their 20%, thus making your fees less. The
paycheck we just got was for $140 -- $60 for one job and $80 for another.
Not huge, especially considering that I live 30 miles from SF, which
although isn't far as the crow flies, can be a 2 hour drive depending on
traffic. I'm not as fond of 8am call times, as that means I have to leave
my house around 5:30-6:00am, but a noon call time is great, because there
will likely be no traffic, and I can leave my house around 11:00am.

For that $140 dollars, I probably spent 3-4 days driving back and forth to
the city with a baby -- first for the go-see/interview, and then for the
photo shoot. Estimate it at 10 hours of drive time, plus parking and
schlepping the baby, stroller, diaper bag, etc., to and from the car to the
location. It's not always fun. So you can see that if I were to average
out Taylor's paycheck to my work and time put in, it's not a great benefit
to me -- about $10-14 per hour. I like to say that Taylor made X amount of
money, but that I earned every penny of it. But it's not my pay, it's hers.
It certainly isn't a glamorous job, for me at least.

That being said, she also had a few jobs on the higher end of the pay scale
(although we have yet to see those paychecks), making $150 per hour, for a
2-4 hour work session (which includes hanging around, playing on the floor,
getting dressed and undressed, shooting photos for 30 minutes, and then
hanging around for another hour or two, just in case they want to shoot some
more). The Hanna Andersson photo shoot was actually held in Pacific Grove,
near Carmel, which is a 3 hour drive away from us, and they gave Taylor a
travel allowance of $200 on top of her modeling fee, which paid for us to go
down the night before the 8:00am photo shoot and stay in a hotel, plus
another night of the hotel. So that was pretty cool. We had been planning
to go down to Santa Barbara that weekend anyway, so we just started earlier
on Wednesday, did the photo shoot on Thursday, spent the next night in the
hotel (thanks to Taylor) and headed off early Friday morning for SB.

If you are interested in getting your child into modeling, first things
first would be personality above looks. Taylor loves people, has no
stranger anxiety, loves the camera, is photogenic, loves large groups of
people, is extremely outgoing, even when very tired, and is basically good
natured and happy 95% of the time. If your child is clingy, doesn't like
strangers, overly shy, and gets tired or cranky quickly, then even if your
child is astonishingly beautiful, modeling won't work out.

Secondly would be your location. Again, even if the personality and looks
are there, but you live too far away from a major city, then you likely
won't be able to make modeling work out. You have to live near to where the
photo shoots happen, for starters. Also, I am required to take Taylor to
go-sees, which is an interview, sometimes only taking 5-10 minutes, but they
are still anywhere from 45 minutes to 2 hours away from my home. We don't
get paid for any of that -- not the driving, not the time spent, not the
parking, etc. We've been very lucky that out of 7 go-sees, Taylor has gotten
5 jobs, plus another job that we never had to go to a go-see for.

Thirdly would be the personality of the mother, as well as availability.
You can't have your child be a model if you work full time. Go-sees and
jobs happen Monday through Friday, 8-5, just like real work. Luckily I'm a
stay-at-home mom with a very flexible schedule. I've gotten calls at 6pm on
Monday for a go-see or photo shoot on Tuesday at 9am, and my response is
always, "We'll be there!" And as you read above, it's me that has to do
the schlepping, the carting, the driving etc,. I complain a little bit
about it, but mostly not, as I willingly signed up for it. Sometimes the
go-sees are chaotic -- 25 kids and moms milling around, waiting to be seen.
We waited for 2+ hours the other day, for a 5 minute Polaroid, then left,
and we didn't get that job. One mother there asked if the go-sees for this
company were always that hectic. I told her it was my second one for them,
but they were both the same. She said, "maybe we just won't do ads for X"
I guess that's an option, but really, you can't start turning down work, or
eventually they'll just stop sending you out at all. That's why it's called
work, and not play.

Finally, you need an agency. When Taylor was 6 months old I sent photos of
her in to 5 modeling agencies in San Francisco, and 3 months later, I
finally heard back from one of them, so that's the agency I decided to use.
They were all reputable, but there are scammers out there, or people who
want to be a manager for your baby, which means that they take another 20%
on top of an agency's 20%, leaving you a lot less. Plus, in my opinion,
babies don't need a lot of managing. Children maybe, but not babies, and
really, that's what the agency is for. They don't really have any real
marketable skills, like tap-dancing, acting, or singing. They just sit and
play with toys and look cute, and if you're really lucky, smile at the
camera.

So, if all of those things line up for you, and you want to give it a try, I
say go ahead. If those things don't line up, then it's not worth the
effort. And it is a lot of effort. I do think it will be cool to get a few
tear sheets from ads, or copies of catalogs, to save for her scrapbook, as
well as getting a few thousand dollars in her college account, but the
moment that Taylor isn't enjoying this, we're done. Or the moment that I
feel that it's affecting her in a negative way, we're done. Would it be
nice if she was able to make a career out of it, and perhaps make lots of
money like the Olsen Twins? Sure, but I'm not counting on it. Would it be
nice if she did it long enough to start her college account --yep, and
we've already done that, so anything more is gravy. We're talking about
adopting another child, which may seriously hamper Taylor's modeling
"career." And if that is the case, so be it. It's just something fun that
we are doing right now.

Just wanna piggyback here a little bit.

When Laszlo was very young, several people suggested that I get him into
modeling. I thought about it briefly, but realized it would involve me
driving him to New York City (only about 40 minutes) regularly and waiting
around places for hours - which can easily throw ME into a panic attack,
especially being in Manhattan! I think that if the mom is mellow and
doesn't mind the schlepping, that's a HUGE part of it.

Also, Laszlo did have a great personality for it at the time, but now if I
even wanted to do it, he's developed quite a mommy attachment and doesn't go
to strangers easily if at all. He'd be a mess in that situation. People
still tell me all the time when they see him or see pictures of him that I
should get him into modeling, but it's just not for either of us at this
time, although he IS quite the handsome lil devil! :-)

Jamie, I also want to say that I remember you from when I was posting here
regularly 2 years ago, and my heart used to ache for you. I'm so thrilled
that you have your baby finally, and that she's such a happy, healthy
beautiful girl. Congratulations, she's a LUCKY little girl.

- Jen

Thanks Jen, I remember you too! I remember you partly due to your screen
name, and partly due to Laszlo's name -- both memorable or unusual.

I do think I got Taylor in at the right time for her personality, although
who knows how she'll be in 6 months to a year. I can't forsee the future,
and maybe she'll always be this good natured and easy going, but who knows.
I can always hope, right?

Awesome! Keep me posted with these...I'd love to see them!!!!!!! That sounds

Awwww! She must have found her calling then...she sounds like the PERFECT
baby..but especially the perfect MODELING baby! :) It sounds like a great
thing to do with your time, despite some of the headaches.

Unfortunately, there are no Mervyn's in Cincinnati or near that I know of.
If you wouldn't mind scanning it to your site or e-mailing it, I'd *love* to
see it!

You can be SURE that it will be scanned and on my website! We have family
and friends in other places that don't have some of these stores as well, so
we'll be sure to make them available on the website for everyone who cares
to check them out.

Definitely second this - we had someone interested in our daughter for photo
modeling (it was also in SF, Jamie, Marla Dell Agency), I think DD was around 8
months old. We figured we'd give it a shot since they were interested in her,
but it ended up being all about personality - we went to the office for the
intial visit and DD was fine in my arms but of course was nervous and cried when
they asked to put her on the floor for a mini-photo shoot. And that was that,
it was over almost before it began! She basically said, she's got the look but
not the personality, she's too clingy, which was true. It was fun to try,
though.

Cara,
Yes, I'm familiar with Marla Dell. We went with Generations. I hadn't
heard of Marla Dell when we started out, so didn't send them any photos. Of
the 5 that I sent photos to, only Generations responded, but I've been very
happy with them. They are calling us lots and sending us out on lots of
go-sees and jobs, so it's all good.

If you don't mind me asking, Jamie, did you pay for Taylor's head shots?
When I was a kid my sister and I did a lot of shoots and commercials as
extras.. my parents say they paid for some of our headshots, but they got to
choose the photographer and pictures and stuff. I took Emily to the only
SAG agency around, and they mandate that you use their photographer and the
photographs are upward of $500. For me, that's not budgetable unless she's
gonna be the next Hillary Duff.

Not to mention, I'd think a babies headshot must be changed every few months
at least, no?

The agency we used said that they could recommend a few different
photographers, or we could use Picture People. We had coincidentally
already signed up for the yearly package at PP, so we opted to go with that.
I took a few different outfits and a stuffed animal, and we got one of those
shots as her headshot photo (full body shot, actually). So it didn't cost
any more than we would have spent anyway. If the agency hadn't liked any of
those photos, we would have paid for a professional, even if she never got
work, they'd be gorgeous, and I'd be thrilled to have them. I'm glad we
didn't need to do that, although I hope to see some of these ads some day,
and perhaps maybe still get some really professional B&W photos done of her.

I wonder if the difference is SAG? Taylor is just doing photo shoots, no
film work or commercials at this point, so we don't have to deal with SAG
yet.

They haven't said anything yet about changing it. It may depend on how much
