My wife is 5 weeks pregnant and we are concerned because we used spray
paint in the basement to paint some furniture. She was not in the
basement while the painting occurred, but we could later smell the
paint in other areas of the house.

Apparently, the fumes from the paint made their way into other areas of
the house when the furnace kicked on to heat the house. We will talk
to our doctor about this, but in the meantime, how concerned should we
be about the spray paint smell in our house?

I wouldn't be significantly concerned. Your nose is
quite sensitive and can smell fumes even in pretty low
concentrations. Obviously, you wouldn't want to do it
again (heck, you shouldn't be spraypainting in an area
without good ventilation yourself!), but odds are
extremely slim that it harmed your wife or baby.

Thanks for your response Ericka. We did only smell the fumes for a
short period before I went down and opened the third window in the
basement. That drew in a lot more fresh air and cleared things up
pretty quickly. Just a really stupid mistake in the Holiday rush
trying to get a present ready. I'll be extremely careful in the
future!

Greg
