I couldn't resist. I've got a couple of little outfits that have our college
on them that I got a while ago and put away, but I bought him/her some little
things of his/her own at BRU. It was the first time in probably a year that
I've been in there and haven't looked wistfully at all the little things, and
that I haven't wanted to burst into tears. (Well, I did get tears in my eyes,
but they were happy tears!) So I got two tiny pairs of socks that have Classic
Pooh on them - they are so tiny, I couldn't believe it. (I have socks with
Pooh on them, so the baby and I can match!) And I got a couple of small short
creepers - like onesies, but the diaper covering part comes up further - one is
blue and one has a print of doggies on it. I have no problem with a girl in
blue occasionally, but I will *not* put pink or purple on my son. They're so
soft. And so little. And I got two long-sleeved onesies, one yellow, and one
print. All are sized Small, but they say up to 14 pounds. I know I can't go
by the age recommendations, but the poundage should be accurate, right? At
least pretty close, I hope. (The stuff was all on sale, so if it doesn't fit,
it's not that much money wasted.) The baby's arriving in Feb./March, so it'll
still be cold here until probably April, so the long-sleeved things will come
in handy I think, right away, and when it gets warm in May and June, the baby
should still fit in 14-pound clothes, right? The stuff was just so darn cute.
I'm so happy! I still don't fully believe it's real, but wow!

So for those of you who had babies at the end of winter/beginning of spring,
what did you dress them in during the days? I'm thinking onesies and stretchy
pants, one-piece sleep-and-play suits, creepers/rompers when it got warmer,
that sort of thing. I'm big on comfortable, cozy, cuddly kind of stuff. And I
think onesies are the best invention ever. :)

Thanks! Just had to share my excitement with all of you! I hope the novelty
doesn't wear off any time soon. :) For those of you in the last weeks, feeling
miserable, I can't wait to get to that stage, but I'm enjoying this one a LOT!

And what's funny is that they will most likely be HUGE on the baby at first,
LOL.
We had to go out and get some preemie stuff for Peyton at first. All the
newborn stuff was so HUGE that her arms kept coming out of the neck of her
gowns while she slept. I was scared she was going to get all tangled up and
suffocate herself. It probably wouldn't have happened, but the little bit of
extra money we spent on the preemie clothes for her was worth the peace of
mind!
It sounds like you're loving every second of this! I'm SO happy for you Sara!

I have some Classic Pooh socks that I got as part of a shower present-
sounds like the same thing. ;-) Have fun buying little things here or
there. If you are looking for a GREAT deal- check out Baby Gap right now-
they have a lot of newborn essentials on sale that can be mixed and matched,
etc., and they are on sale for really cheap.

Also, get your baby book if you haven't already- and start recording stuff.
I actually waited until I knew the sex to do that, but I was SO nervous
(still am) about the pregnancy- it was hard to buy too much at first.

I know! It seems amazing that a human being will ever be that tiny and have
little arms that fit into the clothes, and yet, I know they'll be huge at
first!

That makes sense. How big was Peyton when she was born? I'm hoping for a
little one, actually. I was not even 6 and a half pounds at birth, and they
didn't have quite the range of preemie clothes in the 70's (I wasn't really a
preemie though, just 2 weeks before my due date, but I was tiny) - all of the
clothes were too big, so my mom's friend found dresses in size 00 for me!

Thanks Amy! I *am* loving it. I know the sickness and uncomfortableness is
going to hit pretty soon, but this stage, the stage of it not being quite real
and very exciting, is so wonderful!

It's so much fun to buy the little things! And buying them little by little
spreads it out.

Oh, great suggestion! I have all this stuff in my head from the last 48 hours,
and while my memory is still very very clear, I need to write it all down in a
journal. And I should definitely start the baby book too. Though I'm quite
nervous about the pregnancy. Buying clothes is one thing, but writing stuff
about it is a little scary. But I can't think about that - I have to keep
focused on how exciting it is!

Meme was born in early May but it was still kinda cold here in
Cincinnati and she just wore little Gymboree pants and matching
sweaters/sweatshirts. They are soooo adorable and they look so comfortable.
We also found a few fleece one-peices from Baby Gap that were so fuzzy and
cozy looking. It's really funny to see such small things in sweat-pants...we
found some of those that she wore quite often. <g> Be creative and have fun!

I think I'd have to agree. Meme won't wear anything that doesn't look comfy

Did they *have* anything in purple that could go on a boy? I love purple and
I've been upset that everything in purple I've seen is obviously girly.

Isn't the size thing weird? For my own clothes, I can pick something off the
rack and have a good idea of whether it'll fit me. But I have NO frame of
reference for a baby - I look at everything up to 12 mos and tell DH it's
all tiny! I can't believe he'll be that small! Hopefully it gets easier when

Congrats, Sara! My son is due in October and I swear he already has more clothes
than I do (at least clothes that I can wear now!!). I was lucky to find out about
the pregnancy right around the time that Gymboree had it's huge end-of-season
sale. Got some tiny blue jeans and turtle necks (October is cold) for almost
NOTHING, plus one of those totally soft blankets for like $5. We didn't know the
sex then, but since blue is my favorite color, I bought lots of blue. Now that we
KNOW it's a boy, I've picked up some little camp shirts/shorts and cute creepers.
I still eye the girls' stuff with a little envy, but maybe next time! Enjoy this
time, everyone says it goes so fast!

I don't think they did, actually, but honestly, I wasn't looking that closely
at the more gender-specific stuff. I do know that there was more red and blue
on the boy side and more pink on the girl side.

The size thing is weird. It all seems tiny.

My youngest was born March 1st, weighing 8lbs 10oz, and by May 1st
hadn't yet reached 12lbs, so your clothes will probably be good unless
you have an enormous baby. Weight ranges are helpful unless your baby
is tall (then height is more helpful). We had to cut the feet out of
a couple of things.

For first outfits we had onesies with sretchy romper suits on top. I
recommend you concentrate on one piece suits with feet (ours never
kept her socks on) which open at the crotch for easy changing. It can
be a real pain to pull pants on and off a newborn, plus you're always
worried about whether they're bothering the umbilical stump, then
whether they are too tight on baby's tummy. And loose tops only
bunched up around baby's middle.

They'll let you exchange it or return it at BRU. I bought pink and

Pants are a PAIN when you change the little ones. Ones that are made
to come off at the wait I mean. You want snaps around the crotch area
or a zipper down the leg. Some CP stuff has too many buttons!

I don't use onesies too often, I did when it was colder.

One thing nobody told us to get was nightgowns with mittens. Zander's
hands were always freezing AND he cut the hell out of my breasts and
scratched himself a lot while we were still too scared to cut his
nails.

We needed a lot of hats in February.

I bet it is just when she is going to take him out somewhere. Also,
newborn sizes go up to three months- so probably not right away. I tend to
agree with you- denim seems so scratchy. But I am more into the onsies with
the coordinating striped pants and hats, etc. from Baby Gap or Zutano- I
can't get over them. LOL! I do have a few things that I have to figure out
whether to do overalls/jeans or khakis with, but they are in 3-6 month
sizes.

As far as sizing goes, when Craig arrived at 6lbs, 10 oz. I had to run out
to buy him new clothes, all the clothes that we bought him in the XS or S
(which was 0-3 months, up to 13-14 pounds) literally fell off of him. We
had to go and buy preemie diapers and preemie clothes, because one night
Jason dressed him in an outfit that when I woke up at 2 am to feed him was
wrapped around his neck! They were just literally that much too big for him.
We only bought 4 preemie outfits and 2 layette gowns, and probably only have
another couple of weeks worth of use out of them, hes growing that fast, but
just so you know, the "Newborn" sizes are made for much bigger babies than
mine was!

Sara,

You're so cute. LOL.
For the first month I dressed Jessie in nothing but footed sleepers........they
were so easy, and we really didn't go far. (With a short sleeved onesie
underneath).

After a month I started getting a little braver, and put her in one piece long
sleever outfits or pants and a shirt.

Now, I'm actually having a hard time because it's so hot out, but we have ac.
So I dress her usually in a short sleeve shirt and sometimes pants, or
sometimes a totally summer outfit and I may have to cover her with a blankie on
and off througout the day to make sure she's warm enough,

At night I still put her in the short sleeved onesie and a sleeper with feet.

You never know Sara, it may not. Lots of people have very little morning
sickness! (I was one of them!) I had some nausea, but it was usually only if I
was getting hungry or if I was brushing my teeht (I couldn't floss for about 4
months without gagging!)

I hear ya. I got one turtleneck with she hasnt' worn, as well as a couple of

Oh and for the weight ranges Sara.

Jess was 9 lbs 3 oz at birth and is now 13 1/2 lbs at 12 weeks.

The weight thing doesn't necessarily apply to footed sleepers, though, if the
baby is long. Jess needed size 3-6 months sleepers at about 5-6 weeks, because
she is so long. (and she was not yet 12 lbs, as the weight requirement was
listed).

I agree about the mittens......I only used them for a short period of time, but
it was helpful to keep her from scratching.
The best thing in the first couple of weeks were gowns with the open bottom.
That way a very tired mommy and a very green new daddy didn't have to worry
about buttons and snaps too much. They make gown with little covers on the end
of the arms for mittens that you can fold back if you don't want to use them.
Those were perfect. Just make sure the neck opens up wide enough (a snap in
the neck area is good, you know it'll be wide) so it's not hard to pull over a
newborns head.

That would be okay by me too! I've gotten kinda vaguely nauseous lately when
I've been really hungry, but I tend to get that anyway, pregnant or not, so
it's not much of a change.

That's what I'll probably end up doing with the non-neutral stuff, 'cause I

to have some pink and some blue too!

Huh. Okay, that's really interesting. My experience (day-care and nannying)
was that, at least for toddlers, the snaps were a pain because the kid never
wanted to stay still enough long enough for me to snap them all. Stretchy knit
pants or sweat-type pants were so much easier to pull off and on. Is it
different with newborns? Is that because they don't move much, and they're all
curled up?

Definitely mittens - already on my list. :)

Thanks Tara!

Perfect. Sounds just right. Neither DH nor I were big babies, so I don't
really expect a huge one (though I know our weights are of limited
significance).

>For first outfits we had onesies with sretchy romper suits on top.

So for newborns, it sounds like most people do two layers in addition to the
diaper. A onesie or undershirt, plus the top layer? I guess for a newborn in
our climate (southeastern PA), it'll be pretty chilly.

That's pretty helpful to know; thanks Laurie. Sounds like she gained an
average of about 1 1/3 pounds per month. So assuming that average, and an
average of about 7.5 pounds, I could reasonably expect that at about 3 months,
Little Miracle would weigh around 12 pounds - perfect!

Now if he/she is tall, all bets are off.

Our climate isn't that cold but we did two layers (1 short and 1 long
sleeved) while we were wearing long sleeves. When we went to short
sleeves, baby lost a layer.

You're absolutely right about toddlers, but newborns are all floppy
and much easier to dress lying down, than to have to move them around.
You might change them when they're sleeping. Also, their limbs have
no control and they get tangled up in sleeves and pants legs.
Wriggling about doesn't usually get too bad until they get mobile (6-8
months at least).

Well, for my May 4 baby, that was *not* the case. She gets cranky if I
put more than one layer on her. So during the day I put on a little
dress or outfit and no onesie and during the night just a short sleeve,
no leg onesie. She gets so hot in the long-sleeved footed sleepers -
they all went to waste. :-( I hope my next baby wears them. She would
go nude if I'd let her.

So you have a hot baby! It will be a two-month difference though, and March is
still cold here. It was warm here, pretty much, though, when Em was born.
BTW, why not let her go nude sometimes? Just put her on a water-proof pad and
let her play.

Aww. How sweet Sara. Must be fun to 'legitimately' shop in the baby section!

<confession>

I bought two baby outfits today, despite not ttc yet! I told myself that
they were for my pregnant friend, but now I'm thinking that she only needs
one of them. There were a lot of cute, cute things on sale at Target now
(it's your fault that I was looking today--I have babies on the brain after
your announcement!). I got one sleeper thing for $3.50 and a set of two
onsie things for $6. I'm kicking myself that I didn't buy any of the cute
Brambly Hedge stuff they had at Target this spring, but I felt then like I
would be weird to buy something.

That's OK, Molly--I bought Emma an "I'm the Big Sister" t-shirt before I
knew that I was pregnant this time. That was the way we wanted to tell our
families, so I wanted to be prepared. It was kind of embarrassing when the
checker looked at Emma and said, "Aww, are you a big sister?" and I had to
tell the truth! (This whole thing is so far over Emma's head anyway, so it
didn't matter.)

I got Emma's at Babies R Us. The "sister" shirt has pink and yellow snails
on it with little flowers, and the "brother" shirt has a green and blue
dinosaur on it. They were both cute--the only gripe I have is that the
print on the "sister" shirt is fairly small and in cursive, so people didn't
notice it right away (frustrating when that's the way of revealing the big
news!).

Michelle,

When I thought that was how I would announce it I remembered from MKP that
lots of people said their relatives didn't get it right away. Lol.

Luckily Charlotte was so thrilled with her new shirt that as soon as Dylan
walked in she yelled "Look at my new shirt!". Lol.

I think for the first month or two, you'll be glad for those
long-sleeved sleepers, but you might find you have a hot-blooded baby
too by end of spring! :-) It is so hard sometimes to judge how warmly to
dress a baby.

I'm too scared too. I hate the idea of having accidents on the carpet
when I don't need too. I know she's only 6 1/2 weeks, but she can
already creep from one side of a full bed to the other. :-( On her back
or tummy. Without rolling. Sigh. I'd need a water-proof pad for the
whole house! ;-) And there are too many wasps and bees outside to let
her loose in the lawn.

Peyton was only 6lb 1oz and 18.5in.
All 3 of my babies were tiny... Tré was 6lb 4oz, 19in, Keelyn was 6lb 11oz, 20

Hey you did good Molly!

I've found that I wish I had gotten some of the stuff I saw when we were first
thinking about ttc. For instance, Dundee has this line of stuff called Natural
Basics - it's all cream-colored with pastel designs, and it is *cute.* There
used to be washcloths, outfits, blankets, etc., but now I'm having trouble
finding them. :(

OK, it's June 2001, and my baby is due March 2002. In October of *1999* I
bought my first baby clothing - a tiny tiny tiny t-shirt that says "This is my
first Penn State T-shirt." It has stayed in the drawer, along with a PSU
romper I bought in October 2000, until today, when I took them out, folded them
with the stuff I got yesterday, and placed them in the stroller that I finished
assembling tonight!!! So you're not the only one who buys well in advance. :)

My husband wanted to, to tell the grandparents-to-be, put a shirt on the

Most definitely. I'm guessing around 6 onesies, some sleepers and some gowns,
and about 6 undershirts, all in newborn sizes, and then about that same amount
in small sizes too.

Oh, Carter's is at the top of my list. I love their stuff. My former boss
always bought the best stuff for her preschoolers there - it is appropriate
kid-wear (none of that 4-year-old going on 16 stuff) and wears very well.

Hmmm, that's something I may look into getting gently used, as I honestly doubt
I'm likely to use it too much here in March, but it would still be nice to
have. March is really unpredictable.

<Kicking myself for not getting the cute preemie outfits in the store
yesterday. :)>

That's a good idea. Better to have them and not need them than not have them.
(Though my former boss's kids were preemies, 5 weeks early, so if I have a
girl, she's got tons of stuff to share with me!) I wouldn't consider us to be
extremely wealthy, and it's not like I can go out and just buy whatever I want,
but we are structuring the budget so that there is money available as I find
gear and clothes at good sales.

Thanks Jess!

If you have a girl, I have one from Gymboree that's *gorgeous*. My
daughter wore it exactly twice (it never gets cold enough here) and I
think it's a 6-12 month size (maybe bigger). It would swallow her as a
newborn but would do the job & fit perfectly the next winter. So, if you
have a little girl just remind me & it's yours. I've held on to it

Yeah, that sounds like a good plan. Especially for nighttime - I tend to like
it to be cooler in the house rather than warmer 'cause I like to snuggle under
the quilt, so I may have to adjust the baby's clothing accordingly. :)

I personally love long one-piece knit outfits that snap at the crotch/legs.

Don't worry, Molly ;) My best friend and I have been buying outfits for our

Sara,
Firstly, congratulations on your Little Miracle :-)

My son was born at the end of March.
During the day he wore onsies and then cotton stretchy things,
just tops and bottoms or one piece rompers.
He did have a couple of nicer outfits, but mostly we
just kept to layers of things which were easy to get on
and off.

I only popped socks on when we were going out, and we
had a little cotton hat aswell.

When it got warmer he lived in onsies or creepers.

The one thing I loved about having a Spring baby was being
up in the early hours and it being light. It was
also nice to hang washing (diddy things, but lots of them!)
outside and to not have to worry about snowsuits and
rain gear when going out. In the first weeks it seemed
to take me all morning just to get it together enough
to get out...I probably would not have made it until
dusk if I'd had to worry about putting 100 blankets and
things in the pram and having to get through 40 layers
of clothing to be able to nurse.

Wow, so I really might do well to invest in a couple of preemie outfits. See
how much I've learned already, and how much I really don't know!

>I personally love long one-piece knit outfits that snap at the crotch/legs.

Yep, I really like this look too. It's so cute. Lands End has the cutest set
of baby stuff - it's pastel with stripes and solids and print to match, and a
couple of white pieces with a pastel animal print. Cap, socks, cardigan, etc.,
all to match. Most of it is a little more expensive than I'd normally be
willing to spend on baby clothes, but I'm seriously considering getting the
long one-piece in the animal print, along with booties and cap, and cardigan.
I'd have to pick either pink or blue ahead of time and just send back whichever
I didn't use, but what about washing them ahead of time? If they've been in
the mail, I wouldn't want to put them on my newborn. Decisions, decisions. . .

Hee, hee! And I sure hope you get to use the stuff soon!

I must say, I thought it was fun to buy clothes for our hypothetical future

That's why most newborn turtle necks have snaps on the back so it's quite
easy to put on. And the jeans have either a loose elastic waist or part
elastic and than a button front and zipper. I found them easy enough to put
on when I had Jacob.

People sent us a ton of that stuff when we had Charlotte. I like it too.

It is really cute. I'm bidding on a couple of items from the collection on
e-bay (all new with tags!), but I'm still searching for the rest of it.

Yeah right, you just like seeing it. LOL. We do too!

That Dundee stuff is nice, washes well, and just feels so comfy. It's also
what our crib set is (has a bear and I think rabbit on it). Used it for
Charlotte and Patrick and it's just starting to get flat and look a little
worn now. My Mom wants to get something new for #3. I'm thinking stars and
moons since we still need neutral (and for hopefully another baby after this
one).

A word of advice from a mother of a very big boy.....

When it comes to the sizing of infant clothes, NEVER go by the size in
months. Always use the height and weight measurements. My son was out
of 0-3 months at 8 days, and hasn't looked back since. Now, at a year, he
is easily in 18-24 months, with a few 2T's in there for good measure. I
rmember having to take back a whole bunchof baby clothes because he grew
SO fast!

I never have figured out how I ended up with such a big boy. He was 8lbs,
8oz at birth, 12 lbs at three weeks, and 20 lbs at four months. My
husband and I were both small babies (6 lbs and 6 1/2 lbs at birth) and
average at a year (both around 22 lbs). I also only gained 15 lbs during
the pregnancy, so it really was all baby. I guess the moral of my story
is that you can't always acurately predict the size of your children, even
when you take genetics into account.

But it sure is fun buying all those little clothes!

Take Care,

Sharon

If you can, borrow the really small stuff from friends. They only wear
it for a month, so second-hand stuff usually isn't worn-looking.

Our clothing sizes are different to yours, but DS started off in 0000 (a
month's wear), then went to 000 (for about 6 weeks) and has been in 00
since then. He started off at 3.75 kg (8lb 5 oz) and is now 6.5 kg
(about 13 lb??) at 13 weeks.

Absolutely!! I'm going shopping this afternoon, and I might just have
to treat myself!!

OMG! LOL! I hope not! But that would be pretty cute. :) I think the nurse
would have mentioned the possibility when she gave me my blood hCG levels
yesterday.

Oh, I *always* go by the weight/height. (Hey, I'm a woman...like our sizes
make sense! I never trust them) Granted, I haven't any idea how tall this
guy will be (probably not very, I'm 5'3" and DH is almost 5'9") but we're
pretty sure he'll be big.

My birthson was 10lb 4oz, and my mom had to go exchange his coming-home
outfit for a 3-6mo while I was in the hospital!

And there are lots of indicators that this guy will be big, too (I had a
24wk ultrasound at which he was 87th percentile, plus I've been measuring
*4* cm over my dates since 20 wks), so I haven't bought *anything* in
newborn sizes, as they all seem to go only up to 12-13 lbs.

This should be interesting!

Oh! I loved that stuff too. I used to see it at Wal-Mart all of the time,
but have noticed that it isn't around anymore. I'll have to add that to my
list of "should-haves." I think I've learned my lesson now and if I see
exceptionally cute things I won't leave them and expect to find them later.

Well, that certainly is far in advance! How cute :-)

Speaking of tiny tinyness, I saw the smallest baby while I was working at
the hospital today. He was born at the end of April, and he just now has
gotten up to weighing 5 pounds! His parents were just in getting a check up,
he isn't in the hospital anymore or anything, but goodness, was he ever
tiny!

And, then I had a pregnancy dream that night that I had to tell him about.
Poor guy!

--Molly :)
whose dh is ttc friendly, but doesn't quite seem to *get* just how close it
is that we're talking about (we've formed a plan to pitch the bcps in Jan or
Feb)

Funny, with #1 I was never worried and got lots of things way ahead of
time (we even bought a crib while ttc, which took a year). I never
had any doubts everything would go fine. Then we had secondary
infertility, and 3 m/c, while ttc again, over 4 more years. So with
#2 I was understandably cautious. Then we found out at 20 weeks it
was a boy, like my first, so there wasn't much need to buy things.
Now, I'm 24 weeks with #3 (whom I conceived 12 months after #2 was
born with no trouble at all) and I'm so nervous this time around, it's
driving me crazy. The u/s (several) have indicated a girl, so I'd
really like to buy some girlie things, but I just keep thinking I
don't want to jinx anything (not that I'm worried the sex is wrong,
b/c I really would love another boy, too.) I'm more worried something
will go wrong overall with the pregnancy. I just can't relax. I
haven't bought one single thing yet. Of course, I know I can get by
just fine with the boy stuff anyway, especially at first.

Not just the scratchiness, but they keep their legs all bunched up at
that age. I don't think I put jeans on my sons until about 5 months,
IIRC.
