Last weekend, my son got hit on the forehead with a baseball, producing
an ENORMOUS "goose egg" over his right eye. I was very concerned, as it
swelled up so quickly and grew SO large. He has had other bumps before,
of course, but none like this. The next morning, in addition to the
goose egg, he woke up sporting an awful shiner as well. I was shocked!
Is this common??? Needless to say, he was a frightful sight, but is
looking somewhat better now. When does a bump on the head require a
visit to the doctor? What can be done at home? Why did he get a black
eye when he was hit on the forehead? Has this happened to anyone out
there, and if so, what did you do?

I don't know any answers to your other questions, as I
still wonder when to take mine to the doc/hospital, but
if you are hit close enough to the nose, I know it can
bruise your eye. It maybe cracked his eye brow? I'm not
sure.
I hope he's OK. I feel badly when little kids get hurt,
poor things.

We're going through that right now. Last night my son was hit in the
cheekbone/nose with a baseball. Blood was gushing from his nose, which looked
slightly off-center, so we took him to the emergency room. Fortunately, the
x-rays were negative, but this morning that side of his face is all swollen and
he has a pretty good black eye--what you can see around the swelling, that is.

It sounds like our sons should be playing on the same team (LOL).

Natural protection equal to the amount of impact...

Yes, damage to blood vessels in the area. The skull has litle protection,
blood vessels are close to the surface.

Judgement call. Depends on the location and severity.

When my son was a toddler he bumped his head on a marble floor. No ice and
the goose egg was rising fast.
A stranger came over and said push firmly but not hard on the bump. I
looked at him weird. He laughed and said I'm a paediatrician and it works.
the bump didn't get any bigger
The shiner he got is from the blood that was released into the goose egg.
It is just moving around while being reabssorbed by the body
My doctor says under a year to the dr immediately
After that watch for symptoms of a more severe injury.
Of course if he is dizzy or sees double or lost conciousness

I read somewhere that it's actually a good thing when a large lump
swells up on the head following a serious blow. It means that the
impact has been absorbed by the skull, rather than the brain. It's only
when there's no lump or just a small one that you have to worry. So be
thankful for that goose-egg! I don't know about the black eye though.
Hope this helped you.

KATHY K. WROTE:

Kathy, this is not true and could be very dangerous advice to any
parents of young children reading this! Just because a large swelling
(goose egg) appears following a bad bump, doesn't mean that everything's
alright. Last year, my seven year old took a nasty spill down the
basement stairs. She hit her head hard on the way down, so we rushed
her to the pediatrician. He diagnosed her as having a concussion, and
yes, she was sporting a world-class goose egg-sized lump on her
forehead, along with other bumps and bruises. The size of a lump or the
absence of one is no indication of possible injury to the brain. More
important is how hard he/she was hit and the location of the bump on the
head (the back and sides are worse than the forehead). If the child
exhibits any symptoms of concussion or you're not sure, it's always best
to consult a doctor.

My 19 mo son is constantly getting bumps on his head and I can't take him
every tim or I would be at the Dr's constsntly! Any advice on which goose
eggs should really be looked at? I've heard if they are acting normal after
ie cry for a while brush it off and continue playing they are OK? Don't
know if there is any truth to this but it seems logical? And secondly when
he visits the Dr next is there any way they can check if there was any
dammage done from a previous bonk or is ther anything noticible in your
child if they do have a concusion something a parent would notice?

My question I guess is - is it OK to not take them to the Dr if they cry
and brush it off and seem OK? And is it only necessary to take them if they
don't cry or seem lethargic/sleepy ect?

I really haven't taken him to the Dr for all his bumps and it seems as
though he get goose eggs easily, he is very fair skinned and possibly this
is normal? I likely should take him in and ask these questions to the Dr
but I feel silly going in for a ?minor? bump?

Have you told your ped about your son's frequent bumps on the head? I
don't think the goose-eggs are serious, but if he seems to fall more
than other kids his age, maybe he has another problem that might be
causing all of these bumps, such as an inner-ear thing, or vision
problems, etc.
