I am looking for a good simple and easy to use software that allows
kids to create greeting cards: bday invitations, thank you notes,
RSVPs, etc. There are quite a few of them on the market, so I need
a suggestion.

We have multimedia PC with Windows and 560C printer.

My son enjoys using Print Shop Deluxe CD Ensemble to create cards. You
can download a demo from Broderbund, I think.

I like Print Master Gold! (I have the disk version) I paid $19 at a Kay-Bee
toy store. I like it much much better that Print Shop and because it runs under
Win3 you can use TT fonts. It will do posters, banners and cards, has about 20
nice borders. You can put pictures and text anywhere on the page you want,
(poster) and scale everything up and down. You can also make the text 3D,
shadowed, outlined (and fill with stars, stripes etc.) and a bunch or other
stuff. The clip art is a little better then what I got with Print Shop and
Print Master Gold can import most kinds of art.(WMF, PCX, BMP etc.) If you
have questions I could check the manual for you. BTW I took Print Shop off my
disk after trying Print Master Gold. Also I am sure that there are better
programs then this BUT for the price it works great! There is also a CD version
but the think, after reading the flyer, that the CD is the same program with
more clip art.

It's hard to beat the Print Shop-it's very self explanitory, and the amount
of graphics available is amazing (I have 10 disks of Print shop graphics
just for my Apple //)

Try 'Bailey's Book House' from Edmark. You can create greeting cards for
birthdays, holidays, etc. It is very easy for my 3 year old to use.

It's hard to beat Broderbund's Printshop - especially the CD-ROM pack.
I know there are some fans of Microsoft's Fine Artist program as well,
though.

I have both the Printshop CD Ensemble and CardShop Plux Deluxe on CD.
while i like Printshop, i found i like CardShop better!

1. Printshop lacks drag-and-drop and relies too much on dialogue boxes,
thus making it harder for younger kids to use.
2. Printshop's supplied graphics are a bit too tame,IMHO, comparing to
CardShop.
3. Printshop's supplied pre-built cards are fairly limited, i.e. there's
only one card per type, e.g. one invitation, one birthday....
4. Printshop lacks pre-built text for various occassions. It's not that
CardShop comes with a whole lot, but enough for a starter.
5. CardShop leaves fonts on the CD, where Printshop loads into your harddisk.
6. Printshop (even the regular version) is overpriced comparing to it's
competitors, CardShop and PrintMaster Gold.

Cardshop did crash my HP 660C print driver. but the vendor quickly
came up with a patch to fix the problem.

<snip>

I have CardShop Plus CD which I got at PC Expo for $12.99, *well* worth the
price of the disk, but the amount of paper and color ink my 6yo daughter has
gone through making greeting cards for the known universe is another matter!

On the market now is CardShop Plus Deluxe CD, and I'm curious what the
difference is (besides its being "Deluxe") and if I should spring for the $25
or so to get it (no upgrade available). If it could import better than
thisolder version, that alone might be worth it. Anyone who has both
versions, please share your opinion.

I should mention here that my daughter, who has an artistic bent, has taken
little advantage of other computer art wares (PC Paintbrush, KidPix, an ArtPad
tablet), but is going nuts with this package. I bought it hoping it would
provide a creative outlet producing a tangible product she'd be able to share.
And I'm further hoping that now that I've convinced her that her own phrases
are much more desirable than the canned ones, I can accomplish the same feat
with regards to clipart vs. her original works... <he grins craftily>
