1. Would anyone care to share with me their breastfed baby's monthly
weight gain stats (up to at least 1 year)? I would like to do some
comparisons.

2. I have a weight gain chart for breastfed babies from the WHO -- is
there another chart anyone could refer me to?

Many thanks in advance!

The only one I am aware of is WHO's, however, be aware that the physician's
use the charts for formula fed babies and I have had them argue with me that
all babies need to be growing according to these charts. You may want to
talk with the baby's doctor ahead of time.

I only have 3 months of weight gain to share but you might get some
use out of them.

Cassidy was born weighing 8lb 4oz, at one week was 8lb 13oz, at 4
weeks was 10lb 9oz, at 7 weeks was 12lb 3oz and at 3 months was 14lb
9oz.

I would be very interested in seeing the results of your comparisons.

OK, well my 2 are both girls, so the weights may not be as useful as the
centiles, but here it all is (sorry it's mostly in weeks, that's how my
HVs do it):

POPPY

Birth: 3.39kg 7lb 7.5 between 25th and 50th
3 weeks: 3.74kg 8lb 4 25th
11 weeks: 5.05kg 11lb 2 between 9th and 25th
16 weeks: 5.75kg 12lb 10.5 between 9th and 25th
20 weeks: 6.38kg 14lb 1 between 9th and 25th
24 weeks: 7.02kg 15lb 7 just over 25th
31 weeks: 7.79kg 17lb 3 just over 25th
38 weeks: 8.18kg 18lb 25th
46 weeks: 8.75kg 19lb 5 25th
14.5 months: 10.2kg 22lb 8 50th

and she's on about the 75th now at 3yrs - little fatso!

TILDA

Birth: 4.31kg 9lb 8 between 91st and 98th
3 weeks: 4.78kg 10lb 9 between 91st and 98th
6 weeks: 5.20kg 11lb 7 91st
8 weeks: 5.66kg 12lb 7.5 between 75th and 91st
12 weeks: 6.16kg 13lb 9.5 75th
16 weeks: 6.84kg 15lb 3 75th
21 weeks: 7.54kg 16lb 10 just above 75th
30 weeks: 8.64kg 19lb 1 between 75th and 91st
11.5 months: 10.4kg 22lb 15 between 75th and 91st

and she's still between those two now (21 months).

Anyway, I've never had it suggested that they were doing anything but
very well, and they've moved around a bit on the charts. My HVs are
always more concerned that the child is keeping to their individual
line, rather than one fixed centile.

Hi -- thanks to all for data -- I think I'll forego being fussy & take
girls too! Sorry to everyone for the typo in the subject line. What I
want to do is refit the polynomial (line) used to calculate the expected
weight gain. I'm wondering if the inappropriate form is being used
currently.

Wow! Seems like everyone so far had pretty good sized babies so I'll
throw in Helena's stats to conterbalance :-). I don't have the exact
ounces since I am converting from kilos to pounds and am too lazy to work
out how many ounces the ".xxx" works out to be.....

birth 7.3 lbs
2 months 9.6 lbs
4 months 11.9 lbs
6 months 14.0 lbs
13 months 17.0 lbs

Helena started out around the 25%-50% and quickly dropped to the 3% (and
occasionally off the charts) where she has been ever since. I don't have
the stats for Lorenz but he started out much bigger in the first few
months:

9lbs 5 oz at birth
12lbs at 7 weeks

and now 34 lbs at almost 5 years old (also around the 3-10% in weight)

Laura, mama to Lorenz (almost 5) and Helena (1)

This sounds like my son: he was 7 lbs 14 oz at birth, & now at 10 months he
weighs about 16 - 16.5 lbs. I will know more accurately next week, since I
have a doctor's appointment, at the request of the doctor. My health visitor
weighed him at 7 months, & although I can't remember what he weighed, she
started pushing me to increase the solids he was receiving. I knew this
advice was poor, & confirmed it with various breastfeeding support
organizations, but she apparently does not like being challenged, since she
has raised the issue with the doctors in the practice. I got a letter
requesting that I make an appointment!

Did you ever have any problems with the medical profession re your
daughter's weight gain? I think this is just normal for my son; he's my 3rd
& the other 2 followed similar patterns (although he is a little smaller).
He's doing everything he's supposed to be doing: babbling, cruising, etc.,
but the weight thing is all the health visitor wants to look at.

Don't have a monthly gain but:

Birth: 6 lb. 11 oz.

2 mo. 10 lb. 2 oz.
4 mo. 12 lb. 11 oz.
6 mo. 14 lb. 1 oz.
9 mo. 16 lb. 3 oz.
12 mo. 16 lb. 13 oz.
15 mo. 19 lb. 7 oz.
18 m. 19 lb. 13 oz.
24 mo. 20 lb. 6 oz.

This must be so frustrating for you!! Being called into the doctor's office
over something like this!! I guess I have been very lucky, but I have never
had a problem with the doctors about either of my kids. Of course, it seems to
help a lot when I explain that my husband is 5'4" (as am I) :-). With Lorenz,
he started out and stayed around the 90th percentile until around six months
then dropped like a stone to the 5th percentile. His pediatrician kept
reassuring me that he was just fine (in fact she kept me from panicking about
him not eating any solid food for a year, reassuring me over and over that
breastmilk alone would be just fine until he chose to eat something else). The
one time it really seemed like Lorenz had stopped growing she double-checked
his growth on a "rate of growth" chart and reconfirmed that he was growing well
enough.

With Helena in a new country and a new practice the nurse who did the checks
was slightly more concerned but also noted that her weight is proportional to
her height. Her smallness is probably more exaggerated here in Sweden though,
since most babies are much much bigger (at 13 months she is about the size of
most 6 month olds). The nurse, though, also noted that Helena is in the same
percentile as Lorenz. At one point (around 8 months) she suggested that I try
to get more butter (!) and fat in her diet, but when the doctor saw the numbers
he insisted that she was beautifully proportioned and had no worries. After
the last check-up, when Helena ended up in the 3rdish percentile in height and
weight for the 4th check in a row, even the nurse decided that it was just her
natural growth pattern. She didn't even discuss eating habits with me.

One thing that helps to convince people is a check of the "weight for height".
Maybe you could insist that the doctor investigate whether the weight is
appropriate for the height of your son. In one of my books I have such a chart
and both my children have always fallen somewhere in the 25%-50% which puts
them in the absolutely normal range. In other words, their weight is entirely
appropriate to their height. This chart has saved me soooo many worries about
the health of my children.

Sorry to get so long! This is an issue I have to deal with all the time.....
Hope this helps!

Yes, it's very frustrating. I too am 5' 4" & my dh is only 2" taller, so we
weren't expecting humongous big babies. They all started off average or
above for weight & length, but have dropped over the first few months.

My last comment to the health visitor was 'I refuse to panic because my
health breastfed baby does not conform to a weight chart which is based
mainly on bottle-fed babies & was produced in an era when most babies were
fed pureed steak & boiled egg from the time they were 2 weeks old'. I guess
she just didn't like that I wasn't accepting her advice as valuable. One of
the main reasons I am going to take my son in to the doctor is to point out
that the health visitor is giving inaccurate advice & could maybe use some
more training in this area, or at least she could be aware that she isn't
fully informed. I hate it when health professionals make up answers rather
than admit they don't know something.

I had latch problems so I have LOTS of early data points since they
weighed her each time I saw the LC.

Birth: 9'2"
2 days: 8'11"
5 days: 9'4"
10 days: 9'11"
3 wks: 11'2"
4 wks: 12'2"
5 wks: 12'14"
10 wks: 14'6"
11 wks: 14'12"
3.5 mo: 16'4"
4 mo: 15'14" (illness)
4.5 mo: 17'3"
5 mo: 17'6"
6 mo: 17'4"
10 mo: 19'15"
15 mo: 21 lbs

I took a lot of flack from the ped about her weight from 4-10 months, but
she started teething and had several minor illnesses so her appetite was
up and down. She has dropped from 95+ %ile to 10-25 %ile. I'm not at all
worried but it does get difficult to stand my ground against the peds and
their dumb charts. At 6 months I refused to return for weight checks
between well child checks because they were starting to obsess about every
little fluctation and losing sight of the fact that she's healthy and
developing ahead of schedule .

Well I guess I'll jump in and belatedly add my stats.
Amira:
Birth 8lb 10oz
2 week 10.2 lbs
1 month 12.4 lbs
2 mo 14.8
3 mo 16.6
4 mo 18.8
6 mo 22.4
7 mo 23.6
8 mo 24.6
then she hung around at that 25 lb mark for the longest time, only
gaining a couple of ounces. At a year she still weighed 25 lbs. Now
that she is sixteen months she weighs 26.5 pounds.
Bashir:
Birth 7lbs 8.5oz
1 week 8.3 lbs
2 week 9 lbs
3 week 10 lbs
And that's all I have for him since he is only three and half weeks

My daughter weighed 8lb 4oz when she was born, never lost any weight
and at 7 weeks weighed 12lb 3oz. I thought 1/2 a pound a week was
about normal dropping down to a pound a month from about 3 months.

No, average weight gain is about 2 pounds/month. A pound a month is the
absolute minimum. (And, of course, some babis gain more than 2
pounds/month, especially in the first few months. So 11 pounds sounds just
about right.
