Am I the only one here?? Whenever I start feeding Matthew I feel like I'm
making others uncomfortable.
Or is it culture shock?

you know Brits; lots of quiet tutting & social discomfort at the first
sign of unconventional behavior.

There's a UK-specific BF list on Yahoo. I know lots of moms IRL who nurse or

at least did so for 4 months plus.

I'm here too!

I've fed Kira in public whenever she's wanted it, and I've always been
waiting for someone to make a comment, but it seems that nobody's ever
noticed!

I even stopped and fed her in Marks and Spencers coffee shop in Camberley
the other day as she was shouting "nilk" at the top of her voice and
smacking my chest - and nobody said a word - and she's 2 now, so I was
really expecting someone to at least raise an eyebrow!

Perhaps it depends on which part of the UK you are in?

I was going to bring this exact subject up myself! When I joined a
baby group there was 3 out of 9 of us who breastfed but the other 2
stopped at 6 months. Jared is now 19 months and still going strong.
One day at my place 5 of us were visiting and Jared was grabbing at my
shirt letting me know he wanted milk (he was tired out from all the
playing with his mates) One of the moms who did actually breastfeed
commented that this is why she is SOOO glad she stopped breastfeeding
at 6 months before the baby started demanding the breast in public.
This was about 6 months ago, so Jared was _just_ over a year old!

Now I am sitting here 6 months on, and he is still breastfeeding and I
hate that I have absolutely no support (other then from DH who is
GREAT) and I have no other mum around who has BFed more then 6 months.
I feel so alone and isolated (I know that sounds stupid) I have no one
I can talk to about it as its considered wierd to BFed this long.

Though I did have a friend over from Canada this past month who BFed
for 3 years with both her kids and it was great to be able to nurse
without feeling judged. Not only not feeling judged but being looked
on in a good way for doing something so great for my baby.

I have only been in the UK for 3 years having come from Canada where I
knew SOO many BFing moms. And most of them went for at least a year.
Now I am here and BFing seems so looked down on by people let alone
extended BFing!

Brighton calling!!

Well, near Brighton any way.

Binnies 2 and 1/2 now - feeds morning and evening and I do get the
occasional *ODD* look from people but as I;m ususally covered in mud & cow
poo myself I figure the stares are meant for me. I've only just reasised
hoiw much sympathiy I have with the dairy cows :o)

Haywards Heath has a breastfeeding "cafe" run & supporrted by the local
council so they are trying to help - drop in centre with toys for bigger
kids & such,

Hang on in there girls we're doing the greatest job!!!!!!

Where are you living ? Would it be worthwhile trying to find a La Leche

Hello from Glasgow! Still BF Adam 9.5 months and planning to BF till at
least 2. No probs with the BF so far.

I have 2 BF friends, one BF 12months the other 16 months. I met both these
girls on the internet (Bounty.com back in the days they had message boards
instead of chat rooms). None of my IRL friends had children. Friends and
family tend to be the ones to "comment" on my extended BF. Isn't it sad
that at 9.5 months they already consider it extended?. I do have an aunt
who BF for 3.5 years or so but she is full of "I had to top up with Formula"
stories. Stangers have never said a thing, but I don't take crap from my
family and I sure as hell wouldn't take it from strangers in the street!

I'm a volunteer peer supporter for the Breastfeeding Initiative so between
the training I've had there and the info I get here on MKB I know that I am
right and the rest of the FF pushers are wrong diddly wrong!

Anytime any of you UK'ers are in Glasgow email me.

Hello from St. Albans!

I b'fed my other babies in public with no discomfort when we lived in
London. I was in my early-mid 30's then. Now we have moved out to a
fairly conservative town in Hertfordshire and I am a little older - 40
now - and I feel pretty uncomfortable bf'ig in public. I don't think I
have seen anyone else do so, and 40 yr old women here tend to be
fairly modest about public nudity. So I feel weird.

I am bracing myself and trying to do it anyway except that the baby is
so young that she is in that sleepy state where if we are in public,
she is asleep due to the moving around. So I have gathered my courage
several times only to be unable to test it! I had a coffee in the B&H
cafe the other day and lost my nerve and had to move from a centre
table to a side booth. So I have a way to go yet before I get
comfortable. I just wish I didn't feel like the only public b'feeder
in the whole damn town!

I don't see many women bfing in public - far fewer now in Reading than
before I moved from Oxford - but I've never felt odd doing it. Lijah's
not bfing in the day these days, or I'd come down and have a nurse-in
with you!

Well, I know a couple (possibly more, now I come to think about it) nursing
3 year olds and older. Not me, alas; Lois finally weaned completely a
couple of months back, although I'm still supposed to be feeding her
teddies and her Elmer and ...

I think there's a Saturday meeting sometime soon, but I've mislaid the
piece of paper telling me about it :-( I'll contact our leader and if
you like I'll let you know the information too.
