Senior VIS/Team Leader in the Media Development Division of the
Directorate of Training and Doctrine (DOTD); exercise independent
judgment and originality in the planning, programming, and production
of Special Warfare doctrine and training literature: work with assigned
teams (military writers [SMEs], editors, junior VISs, supervisors) to
1) achieve a mutual understanding of information objectives and target
audience, 2) develop and produce several drafts and 3) produce camera
-ready mechanicals (CRMs) or camera-ready copy (CRC) from the final
"approved" draft. Responsible for overall design (presentation) and
effectiveness (visual literacy), economy of operation, and adherence to
government printing regulations. Execute both mechanical and electronic
means of development and production. Provide guidance to junior VISs
and support agencies. Perform quality control. Additional
responsibility includes the creations of Directorate web pages for
Special Operations Command intranet and occasional acting supervisory
duties. Equipment used: Sun Sparcstation network/Interleaf Technical
Publishing software; IBM/Windows 3.1 and WindowsNT, MS Office Suite
(particularly PowerPoint and WORD6), Photoshop and Illustrator for IBM,
Toolbook Authoring Program, Delrina FormFlow; Netscape, DIDA (HTML
authoring program); line-art and halftone/OCR scanning, laser printers,
classified electronic workstation.
2. Visual Information Specialist (VIS - Printed Media)

Department of the Army LTT award. Tendered prototype training program
for government Visual Information Specialists (VISs) in electronic
publishing information management. Assignment to Northeastern
University (Boston, MA) included: coursework at the university (Boston
area), internships with Hanscom Air Force Base (Concord, MA) and
Wakefield Tech Vocational School (Wakefield, MA), and independent study
in MAC and IBM computer labs. Training and internships involved
computer-generation and computerized pre-press operations for drawing
and illustration, digital photo manipulation, graphic design (ads,
signs, invitations, brochures, newsletters, magazine layout, etc.), and
presentations (slides). Study also included traditional typography,
graphic design, and color. Equipment used: 1) IBM/AT 386/Autographix
v7/8 (slides, vector graphics), Targa Tips (bit-mapped graphics);
Pagemaker for IBM (page layout), video capture camera, 2) Macintosh
IIci/MS Office (text), Pagemaker (page layout), Freehand and
Illustrator (vector drawing), and Persuasion (slides). Four-color
thermal printer, laser printer, halftone scanner.
3. Visual Information Specialist (VIS - Printed Media)

Development and Production Team VIS, Training and Doctrine Management
Division. Reviewed, evaluated, and developed armor and heavy artillery
textbooks and training aids. Instrumental in determining division's
initial manuscript processing procedures. Identified job duties for
VISs working in a "developmental" capacity and their integration into
development/production teams. Determined publication design and
printing processes; performed cost analyses. Developed, printed,
fielded, and revised drafts. Coordinated with support agencies
(illustrators, word-processors, typesetters, photographers, print
plant). Performed quality control. Forwarded camera-ready mechanicals
(CRMs) to Army field print plant or transmitted approved final draft
with graphics to the Armor Center's publications division for CRMs.
Input in VIS procedures/requirements for computer network configuration
and researched current electronic publishing systems. Equipment used:
Intel 310 network (WYSE/LYRIX software, Zenith/Multimate software);
Macintosh/MacPaint and MacDraw software. Experimented with Ventura
Publishing, Pagemaker and CADKEY software, but division did not
institute applications.
4. Graphic Artist

Developed and produced full-color maquettes and black-and-white
presentations for prospective product lines of printed fabric,
wallpaper, and paper products. Coordinated with designer Lillian August
in creating graphic elements, repetitive patterns, and color groupings.
Produced camera-ready copy for fabric printing house staffs.
5. Artist-In-Residence
Kentucky Arts Commission/Monroe County Schools
NEA A.I.E. Program, Frankfort, KY 40502 (Monroe County Schools)
Itinerant professional artist/teacher for four elementary schools (K-8)
and 1 day-care center. Designed Artist-In-Education program, with state
arts commission guidance, scheduling classes and itineraries. Exhibited
students' work after each rotation. Initiated and coordinated an annual
Visiting Artists series. Conducted projects with high-school students
during visiting artists' programs or during community projects. Served
as community "resource," facilitating joint school/community projects.
Operated budget for supplies, documentation and artists' salaries.
Recruited volunteers and donations for supplies. Coordinated news
coverage of projects. In addition to class-contact time, maintained a
public art studio. Documented school activities and community events
sponsored by the program photographically. Filed annual program review
with the Kentucky Arts Commission. The A.I.E. Program is an annual
renewable state contract with local school boards. I was required, as
Artist-In-Residence, to brief my school board on the year's activities
and personally bid for the next year's contract.

freshmen and sophomores.
7. Artist-In-Residence
Jefferson Co. Public Schools, Emergency School Aid Act (ESAA) Project
Brown Hotel Offices, 4th & Broadway, Louisville 40202
Professional artist/teacher for the Special Arts Project (federally
funded ESAA project). Conducted mural projects at the middle-school
level. Coordinated mural subjects with each school's CORE curriculum.
Guided students through the concept, research, and planning stages,
then through the actual mural production. Structured program to place
emphases on use of color, design principles, and production techniques,
as well and art history and local/world history overviews. Guided
student research. Organized teams. The project's primary concern was
developing students' communication and cooperation skills through
shared interracial and intercultural experiences. The murals were just
one type of project used to facilitate these experiences.
8. Artist-In-Residence
Louisville Art Gallery/Louisville Free Public Library

Artist-in-residence for a teaching gallery associated with the public
library system. Under the auspices of the library, the gallery
sponsored short-term mural projects in the branch libraries for
elementary-school children. Coordinated with branch libraries to
initiate murals with subjects historically connected to the area of the
city in which each branch was located. Arranged for supplies. Arranged
for guest speakers and performers to involve, educate and expose the
project participants to the area's background through art, lecture,
music, and dance performances. Facilitated children of a range of ages
to work as a group. Instructed and assisted them in the design,
enlargement and production of the murals. (One branch library continued
painting the room and objects in it to match the wall mural.)
Participated in a public "exhibition opening" for each mural.
Coordinated news coverage of the projects in local or neighborhood
newspapers.
