Today, after the market closed, I caught the tail end of the movie "Limit Up" on the Comedy channel. Although it had a fantasy
aspect to the theme, it was very interesting to see a lot of up close scenes of arbing action in the soybean pit. I personally have
been on the exchange floor three times, but I've only seen the action from the backside.
Since I'm not much of a movie person, are there any other movies out there that involve futures trading or futures exchange action.
I want to expand my knowledge about floor brokers and traders.
I want to check and see if these movies are available for rent. I'm not interested in movies about stock trading or stock markets.
Thanks.
John
>To My Fellow Traders;
Check out "Trading Places." Not much on the floor aspect of trading,
but some, and a pretty funny flick too.

financials.....

I saw a film 4 years back where a women working as a clerk at
one of the Chicago exchanges sells her soul to someone she thinks
is the devil in return for fabulous success as a local. It was
definitely B-Grade but mildly amusing. I think the plot was she
has regrets, figures out a way to welch on the deal. Kind of
smacked of a vanity project by some traders (??). Features Ray Charles
as a certain Transcendant Being, if I recall.

I think this movie call "Limited Up"!
Yeah, or maybe "Limit Up". Sounds right, but I can't really remember.
And how about "Limit Up", a real straight-to-video story about a female
soybean trader. If you want to know why nobody ever heard of it, keep in
mind that it starred Nancy Allen and Ray Charles. Yes, THAT Ray
Charles...S

"ROLLOVER" was a terrific subject (Japanese not rolling over their many U.
S. Treasuries) with Jane Fonda & bearded singer ((what's his name?) Chris
Christopherson, I think. Unfortunately, they mouthed their lines in a way
you could tell they didn't understand what they were saying.
Of course, "Trading Places" was a riot and well done.

After reading this thread it comes to my attention that
there is a lack of movies involving this subject. It seems
to me that pit trading could make an excellent back drop for
a movie (al la "Casino"). Mayby some aspiring screen writer
will read this thread and write a movie. Be sure to send
me my royalties.

Anyone read this book - I'd be interested if it's worth $53.00 - saw it
in latest futures magazine.

I haven't read the book, but I can tell you that Larry wouldn't trade
they way he did for the book as a normal mode of operation (He said so
himself during a seminar I attended). It is a journal of how he won
a trading contest by running a 10K account to over 1,000,000 over
the period of a year. Basicly, he stayed 80% leveraged at all times,
and drove himself crazy with the equity swings. He wanted to prove
that he could do it. BTW the adds don't mention this, but his equity
peaked at over 2 million, but he had drawn it back down to a bit over
1 million by the end of the year. So the title could just as well have
read "How I lost 1 million trading futures in under six months" :)
I the local book store carried it, I would buy it, just for a fun read.
If you are looking for a good basic trading text, with a reasonable
plan, try Curtis Arnold's PPS Trading System. It's plain vanilla
stuff, but presents a very reasonable plan, including money management
strategies.
If you know what's good for you, DON'T try Curtis Arnold's PPS Trading
System.
That's an interesting remark. Would you care to elaborate? I have
reviewed the system, and it's basicly sound. I don't agree with his
profit objectives, or his stop loss points, but the basic metodology of
trading off of continuation patterns in a trend, with defined risk, is
sound. What has you so negative on it?

OK - so I am curious - what is wrong/right with the PPS system? I am
interested with opinions of people who have read the book and trade.
I read the book. I was one of Curtis's students in his second group.
I found the principles included in the system to be pretty standard
(cut losses short, let profits run), but the actual signals quite
subjective. I was unable to make the same subjective judgments that
Curtis made, and therefore didn't make the money that he did.
Another idea came along - Curtis provided signals to a CTA, who would
manage a pool for those like myself that wanted the benefits but
couldn't make it work for themselves. The short version on this story
is that I lost 30% in 12 months. The CTA blamed the system for not
being able to operate with larger amounts of money (big slippage with
more contracts involved), and Curtis blamed the CTA for poor
execution.
I called Curtis and asked him for details on why the system wasn't
working anymore. He said "Times change and markets evolve. I've
found that adding such-and-such a filter helped, and I factor in data
from other-source as well. PPS is just another tool in the trader's
bag of tricks."
I found Curtis to be less than honest in his claims and dealings with
me. I would not have anything more to do with him, regardless of how
good he might think his 'next' system might be. Good luck!

---- Dear people, try reading "Winner Take All" by William R.
Gallacher and find out the truth about that famous 1 million
dollar profit in one year.
The NFA was not amused. There were some bothersome omissions
in the disclosure statements supporting the solicitations, and on
August 10, 1988, the NFA issued a formal complaint against both
Robbins Trading Co., and Larry Williams. It seems the NFA had got
wind of some odd discrepancies between Williams' personal
trading performance and the performance enjoyed by his investors
during the period the World Cup contest was running.
During the first quarter of 1987, when his contest account was
appreciating from $10,000 to $200,000, Williams managed accounts
were losing, and losing BIG, up to 40% drawdowns. Findings and
conclusions of the NFA " there is no questions that Mr. Williams's
personal trading account had a material effect upon his composite trading
performance. The record reflects that for the first quarter of
1987, Mr Williams's composite performance showed a loss of $6,122,281,
while at the same time Mr.Williams,s personal accounts experienced
a gain of $902,599. The Panel finds that the fact that Mr.Williams
was making significant gains while his managed customer accounts
were suffering major losses would be a material fact which a
potential customer would need to know in order to make a fully
reasoned decision"
On December 19, 1989, the NFA imposed fines of $35000 on both
Williams and Robbins Trading Co.
HOW INCREDIBLE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
