I'm not interested in hardcopy reports. And of course I'd like
to keep the costs down. ($0 is good)
Oh, I forgot to ask, "Is there a FAQ for this?"
I've also read some of the comments on Kip's and Morningstar
and would love more info/opinion on what ya'll like and don't
like.
Thanks for the info I've read so far...

I'll let someone else answer the historical data question.
I've been using Compuserve and Quicken Companion to download daily
fund NAV's. It's very easy to set up, trivial to use, feeds the
results straight into my Quicken data files, where I can run reports
on it, and only costs the Compuserve charges, which seem to be running
about $10-15 per month at my current usage rate.
There may be better services, but I haven't found one yet.

Sorry I don't have an answer for your question. I'm just here
to get up on my own soapbox for a while. I monitor funds with
a data service called Telescan. I create "autorun" files which
are lists of ticker symbols (corresponding to each of the funds)
and create pretty charts of all the funds in question with one
single mouse click. Here's something I discovered in a casual session
with Telescan...
Looking at Value and Growth funds I find that 20th Century Ultra and
Vista, although incredibly volatile, posted little in the way of
capital gains in the last 6 months. Acorn and Strong were similarly
lackluster (at least MY idea of lackluster). Heartland put in nice
consistant performance. In fact it was meteoric over the past 6 months.
Invesco Value was very nicely consistant too although the return was
less than Heartland. Most of Invesco's funds are posting solid
consistant gains. Same with Oakmark. Consistant gains.
So I found it interesting that some of the widley touted funds really
were not all that great. Wish I had gotten into Heartland 6 months ago.

I subscribe to Investor's FastTrack, a proprietary $240/yr (daily
toll-free dialup) mutual fund database/technical & ranking (tables)
program. It contains daily NAVs and distributions for 770 MFs and 30
indices going back to 9/1/88. Later, I wrote a short BASIC program
which uses the NAVs exported from the database to plot the charts
that I post here from time to time.
Investor's FastTrack used to have a $30 monthly trial that included the
whole program _and_ the database--a real steal, IMHO. What you need is
a decent PC, 10MB HD, VGA, and a 9600 bps modem. Try 1-800-749-1348 for
more info.
