local or big companies for retirement and TOD

Hi,
Is there any advantage in using a local retirement agency other than something like Fidelity or T.Rowe Price, when you consider endgame type scenarios?
Iow, are large companies just as personable as the smaller ones. I've noticed a few relatives shift funds to a smaller local retirement agency, one that has ties to Franklin funds, but they do not seem to be that aggressive in money management. But they seem to be well scrubbed, nice people that are very personable. I think they shifted because of some sort of convenience or risk concern.
