Every year, I get a statement titled "Your Social Security Statement"
which details all of my earnings since I started paying social
security taxes and provides a summary of benefits I would be eligible
for in various scenarios. I didn't get that statement last year
(2011). Has something changed with respect to sending out these
statements?

Thanks.

Yes. The government decided it didn't want to spend
the dollars to send out the statements and has therefore
indefinitely suspended sending them out.

According to AARP the SSA "will resume mailing the annual statements to
workers age 60 and older who are not yet receiving benefits".

Bummer. It used to serve as an easy summary of all my
earnings (sometimes depressing because I wonder where
all of it went :)).

Thanks for the reply.

The information for the statement in supposedly available on the web according to SS:
http://www.ssa.gov/mystatement/
I have not actually tried this yet.
Also the web version is an interactive spreadsheet where you experiment with ending you job at various years and see how this impacts your pension or disability.

To this point, one year I caught a missing year on the form, i.e. a zero
where I have a year's work, about ten years prior.
Fortunately, one thing I still pack-rat is my returns, W2s included, and
it was a quick mail-in to get it straight. Not sure when that would have
come to my attention otherwise.

I just got one in the mail yesterday. Not sure if it was automatic or
based on my own query at the soc sec web site.
