We have a GEC Cyclo Control System controlling steam valves etc on one of
our industrial sites (UK) which I suspect is causing power quality problems.
I have carried out pq monitoring and correlated the cyclo control signals
with disturbances. I understand the controller technology is from the 1970s
and I assume this has been superseded by mains-bourne signalling/telemetry
systems(?). Has anyone had any experience with cyclo control systems and pq
problems?

Cyclo applies a very brief short circuit to the mains when voltage is nearly
zero causing a slight distortion in waveform at crossover, this would produce
some harmonics. From memory it is usually applied on the 400 volt side of a
11,000/415 volt transformer to cover a 11,000 volt network so any disturbance
would be greater on the 415/240 volt network fed from that transformer. If
the power quality problem was on that network, an alternative feed could be
used although I accept that the bean-counters would be a problem here.

A few systems were installed in New Zealand on utility networks for load
control and streetlight switching (to replace ATM Rythmatic and MV Ripplay
systems - these operated in the 200 - 1500 Hz range), but I understand that
they were not particularly successful. I was unaware of power quality
problems bcaused by Cyclo.

If you want more information I could try and track down an engineer involved
with one of these systems.

What Peter syas is quite correct. Suplies taken from the same
415V as the transmitter connection will receive large signal
levels. However there are ways to reduce this signal if it
causing a problem.

We (BLD Computer Solutions) took on the support for CycloControl
after GEC Meters stopped manufacure in 1993.

I worked at GEC for 15 years, CycloControl being one of my main
responsibilties. In particular design of copntrol systems and
installation. We also employ one of the original designers of
CycloControl Martin Gray.

If you/anybody needs assistance with CycloControl problems then
please contact us at Geoff...@bldcs.co.uk. We will be pleased
to help.

> Just to add a little more to the reply given by Geoff Davis of BLD Computer Solutions. Cyclo

Systems Ltd and BLD have been working together for some time to further
develop and support the CycloControl product. To date the system has
undergone significant improvements and enhancements and we have an active
customer base. I was interested to read Peters comments on the installations
in New Zealand, I will be visiting a CycloControl user in Auckland next week
to evaluate his installation.
