It's me again with another question. I have seen a lot of
references to a rule that a PR that remains outside of Canada for more
than six months (183 days) in any one year period risks losing his PR
status, and there are even various FAQs that still include this
information.
But, I checked the official government CIC site (see quoted text
below) and it seems to read as if this is no longer true (i.e. that it
is replaced by a requirement that PR be in Canada 2 out of every 5
years). Forgive my newbieness, but is this true?
Thanks,
Ravi

Permanent Residency Obligations
Here is what you must do to comply with your residency obligations.
You must accumulate two years of physical presence in Canada in every
five-year period. You can also count Canadian residency days if you are
outside Canada for an extended period of time for one of the following
reasons:
[.... reasons omitted....]
Returning Resident Permit
If you became a permanent resident of Canada before June 28, 2002 you
may still be the holder of a Returning Resident Permit issued to you
under the previous legislation.
Under the transitional provisions, if you are a permanent resident who
is in possession of a Returning Resident Permit, you will be able to
count time spent outside Canada towards satisfying your residency
obligations. The time period covered by the Returning Resident Permit
must apply to the period being examined.

I'm also very much interested in this topic and CIC seems to answer all
calls now just inside the Canada..
My understanding of this new law - our family has to enter Canada
(we're applying as a skilled immigrants) and get our passport stamped.
Then we may leave for certain period of time to actually find a job,
but doing that from our country of origin rather than from Canada. We
might do it for up to 3 years, then enter Canada again and must stay
there for 2 years without leaving Canada. Then we would still qualify
for permanent resident status, correct?
Thanks in advance for your answer,
Oleg.
