A few minutes ago I was notified by my Dr's office that I need to seem
him today after he received results of blood test. Sugar is high -
won't way how much but not out of sight but now my cholesterol is so
high he has to see me immediately. Anybody out there on med. for this
and do I need to be afraid of side effects? My everyday diet is not
high in fat so I know I will need meds.

I've been on Zocor for a couple of years now. Initially, I think you
have to have liver tests, but I haven't had any side effects, except for
a nicely plummeting LDL.

Don't make the mistake of letting your doc guilt you about a high fat
diet. Modern research indicates that about 80% of blood cholesterol is
produced by the liver. If you are genetically predisposed to be a
cholesterol producer, lowering fat intake just makes your liver produce
more.
If you increase dietary fat, your liver will just make less cholesterol.

This is not to say that one shouldn't emphasize "good" fats, i.e.,
monounsaturated ones.

As to meds, the most common is Lipitor (atorvastatin). It has few
side-effects and seems to work well.

Check out the book "Eater Choice: The Cholesterol Lowering Bible" by Goor.
It helped me a lot.

Good Luck.

There was an interesting article in the paper yesterday
about a cholesterol-thyroid link. See

I once tested with, Well,,, A bit of blood in my cholesterol might be the
funny way to say it. (Blood was actually cream colored instead of red)

I was put on assorted lipid medications. Last cholesterol readings were
HDL: normal
LDL: normal
TOTAL: normal
Risk factor: NORMAL
Triglycerides: NORMAL

So the medication is effective

Some of the lipid meds affect sexual performance. Some can affect liver
I would read the Patient Provided Information sheets that the pharmacy gives
you.

One of the lipid modification drugs they may try is Nician, (Niaspan is the
one I tried) This one turned out to have no effect on my blood profile but
it gave me some serious other problems. Occasional "Flushing"

Imagine taking a bath in mild acid or itching powder. ALL OVER THE BODY.

It was not fun.

No lasting harm however, discontinued the drug and the symptoms were
discontinued as well.

Note I am not a doctor, I don't even play one on television
