... CPACC ... restricts the amount of magnesium
delivered to the energy-producing parts of cells
known as mitochondria.
Although magnesium is a critical element for
good health along with calcium, sodium, and
potassium, too much magnesium can slow
down the energy production in mitochondria,
leading to less efficient sugar and fat metab-
olism.
When scientists deleted the gene MRS2 in mice
that promotes magnesium absorption into the
mitochondria, the rodent’s metabolism increased
— resulting in weight loss and no sign of fatty liver
disease. CPACC — a small, synthesized molecule —
produces the same results.
... Although the results of this mouse study appear
promising, the scientists still need to develop an
MRS2-modulating molecule for research involving
human participants.
In addition, the study authors say that the MRS2
channel is expressed widely throughout the body.
Therefore, investigations are needed to examine
the effects modulating MRS2 could have on other
organs, including the brain, heart, kidneys, lungs,
and muscles.
