What are the expected/acceptable BG readings for a pre-diabetic or
early stage type 2 diabetic? The figures I've been using are:

Fasting, mornings before breakfast and no food since the night before
should be equal to or less than 120 mg/dL

One and a half hours postprandial should be equal to or less than 140
mg/dL.

What other readings should I be taking and what values should I
expect?

I'm a 77 year old male of northern European (Norwegian/German/English)
extraction. I weigh 175 lbs. I have a large bone structure, so this
weight should be about as good as I can hope for.

What can and what should I do to prevent or slow down the development
of my diabetes condition into full blown type 2 or worse?

Thanks, Susan. I've downloaded and studied the information above. It
is very informing but I still have some questions. I was diagnosed
"Pre Diabetic" a few years back then my condition worsened and my
doctor put me on Glimepiride. This held things in check for a while
but when I got my low carb diet worked out my BG readings began to
fall into the dangerously low range and my doctor took me off the
Glimepiride.

Everything was nice and stable with my BG readings in the range my
doctor thought was good. But, recently my morning fasting BG reading
has been a bit high. This fasting BG reading used to fall in the 90 to
110 mg/dL range but for the past few months it has been up in the 115
to 140 mg/dL range. I know this isn't dangerous, yet, but I would like
to figure out what caused this up-swing.

My postprandial readings have also moved up a bit but not enough to
cause any concern. Occasionally these postprandial readings will be in
the 160 or sometimes in the 170 mg/dL range but most of the time they
are below 140. I can usually link the higher readings to some food
I've eaten, such as a rich fruit desert or some such source of carbs.

Any suggestions as to what may be causing my fasting BG reading to
move up as it has?

In his book 'Diabetes Solution', Dr. Richard Bernstein has his T2
patients shoot for 'normal' readings - around 83 - certainly below 90. I
can maintain that with oral meds, exercise and a low carb diet.

I'd suggest a couple of books for you: Diabetes for Dummies and the
aforementioned Diabetes Solution.
