Hi,

the subject says it all, what is the least expensive way to learn
1. solaris
2. hpux
3. aix.

Since I want to learn these to get sysadmin jobs, "learn on the job"
is not a great answer.
Is there a way to run each of these on intel machines, for example (of
which I have many lying around).
failing this, what are the cheapest, commonly available systems each
of these will run on?
I've learned a lot about linux, installing on several networks and
386s/486s/586s, but I find a lot of employers want platform - specific
experience, so the linux experience is wasted on them (although I
enjoy it a lot).

$150.00? Heck, I'll sell a copy for 50.00. (With WABI, Answerbook, etc.)

evidently an old old old outdated version of AIX will run on some certain
PS/2's (model 80s?), but it was version 1.2 or so, which makes it very
unrealistic for learning AIX on. one can find used RS/6000's for about a
grand which may run AIXv3.x or even 4.x, which would be the most profitable
way to go with AIX. check the usenet workstation sales groups for info on
that one.

HP-UX is a little more dificult. old apollos, which can be had for cheap (maybe
about $500 US for a useful setup in many occassions), can often run HPUX 9.x
(with the current version being 10.x. i do not know the changes or their
significance since v9.x), but the real difficulty if finding the media.

in short, to learn all three would entail about 3 grand or so as a baseline.
also, real world experience (ie a user calling you at 3am with horkage, or
settingup a server, or a heterogeneous network with Mac, NT/95, Sun's and
HP's) will be lacking if you have your living room a meseum to antique
workstations. if you are in college, learn some basics and then find a group
with a workstation and see if they need or want a junior sysadmin. that's
good experience, and very common, and quite possibly the best experience.
nothing will prepare you for a few dozen users needing data yesterday as you
try and isolate horkage before your morning coffee.

If you are a student you can purchase SolarisX86 2.5.1 for
$99.00. The phone number is 1-800-864-5150.

That's not precisely true. The AIX/2 1.2 is much newer than AIX/6000 1.2. The
two OS's are very different underneath, yet have a similar interface and API.

One can easily find an HP 9000/300 series for very little. I believe that they
can run HP-UX 9.05.

I would recommend using Solaris x86 in the beginning until you know enough
so that you can invest in more machines. Ciao.

I *have* to ask... just what, exactly, is "horkage"?

I remember hearing the term when I started BBSing many moons ago... I
first heard them uttered from some Berkleyites, specifically tjames :)

$99 for 2.5.1 from your local college bookstore, if you have a student ID.

I was GIVING two 300 series boxes away a few months ago.

Yep. If you're a college student, start asking around about machines on
your campus that you might be able to get a shell account on. That's how
I learned. Get to know the local sysadmins. Get to know the academic
computing people. Show an interest in learning as much as you can. You
shouldn't have any problem finding people to assist you.
