Hello, I've been skinny all my life and I'd really like to gain a few
lbs. I've been reading a lot online and the one thing common is to eat
more calories than I burn. The trouble is I've tried that in the past
and although I gain weight, I still look skinny but with a spare tire.
Everything I eat goes straight to my stomach. Bad genes I guess. The
last time I really tried to gain weight, I was working out with
weights at the time. Still, every lb went straight to my waist. I
can't lift a lot of weights since I broke my wrists a few years ago,
so how do I gain weight (muscle), without getting a huge spare tire? I
know that if I start eating a lot more, no matter what I eat, it's all
going to my middle.
By the way, I've stayed around 135 since high school. I'm 5' 7'' , 48
yrs old. Any suggestions will be greatly appreciated.

Rick,
Can you still work out with weights? If you can't, you are going to have a
hell of a time gaining muscle. I also suspect that when you tried to gain
weight in the past you just ate crap. If you increase your calories just
above your maintenance and eat well, you will be more apt to gain muscle
than fat. It is also hard to tell what problems you may have had as we don't
know how much you were training etc. Let us know what you were eating and
how you were training.

Hi Rick,

I know exactly how you feel, I am about your same size, weight, a
little older, but what I found worked best for me was to get on a diet
of protien and try to start working out alittle more with weights, as
your muscles grow, so will your weight, I went from 140 to 145 in
about two months , find the foods with the protien, Chicken, fish,
ect. Have you ever seen how many grams of protien there are in a can
of baked beans?, Yes I know carbs to, but if your working out, your
burning the carbs. Hope this helps.

Iirc, I've mentioned this bit of trivia in MFW previously, but there
was a comedian who used something related in his routine, stating that
bodybuilding makes everything else look bigger and therefore actually
makes the penis look smaller!

Anyway, if that's anyone's motivation to lift, well, they might want
to reconsider.

Another comedian I saw perform live in Lancaster, Pennsylvania, had a
better(?) - if obviously more painful - strategy.

He said he was taking a shower and some wasps attacked him. You
guessed it. He was stung big time and lamented to the docs, something
like, "Do you have something that will reduce the pain but KEEP the
swelling?"

Ouch!

A "diet of protien?" What the fuck does that mean? How are you going to give
advice about diet when you can't even spell protein correctly? You are an
illiterate monkey.

Robert, you have an unnecessary space after illiterate. You know, in
the spirit of all things correct.

Darn that kill file.

Anyway, Robert's correct. Ken misspelled protein.

He also misspelled the abbreviation for et cetera as "ect." That
should've been etc., of course.

There was also this rather botched sentence:

"Yes I know carbs to, but if your working out, your burning the carbs.
Hope this helps."

Too and you're as necessary above, please. ;o)

I wonder shy, oops, *why* Schuh didn't correct those errors. Hey, in
for a penny, in for a pound? Hmmm. I also wonder how many grammar and
spelling errors I've made in this one post.

(Ken wrote)

Robert didn't snip that. Not sure if it's the correct URL or one of
the, what, 18 times Ken posted the incorrect URL.

(shrug)

Regardless of the misspellings, it was still a nice, encouraging post,
imo. Gee, almost inspiiiiiirational.

And, no one asked, but WOW! I'm actually surprised that Robert's back
to his old ways. RE-posting the (to him at least) offending URLs.
Thought he'd changed his ways.

heh :o)

Every post where Schuh swears or calls someone a moron from now on,
well, I'll be chuckling and thinking of Shute's comment about him at
least having a nice personality. Or something like that. May have
butchered the quote, but it still brings a smile.

Yes There were a few miss spelled words, Please forgive me Robert as I
was in a little bit of a hurry this morning, I guess I had better
things to do than to spend my life in a forum swearing at people. I
wonder how many people would like your advice, Gee could you give us

If you pick up pretty much any muscle magazine, Rick, you'll see
before and after pics. Typically, the one image has a guy with no tan,
a hairy chest, and a fat gut while the other image will display the
same guy, however, with a tan, his bodyhair shaved, and a six-pack.
Amazingly, some of these advertisements actually state something like
GAINED 30 POUNDS OF MUSCLE!

Bullshit. What they did was actually lost fat, tanned, and, yeah,
shaved. But the key factor is in losing fat. Get yourself a copy of
The Abs Diet by David Zinczenko - available at Wal-Mart for about ten
bucks.

Or cut your calories down by eating smaller but more frequent meals.
The diet's explained in Zinczenko's book.

Ouch! How'd you do that?

Again, concentrate on losing weight while working out. Weights
(machines where your grip is not utilized, actually, to avoid effing
up your wrists further) first and then cardio to end your session or
on alternate days.

Again, machines.

He said he broke his wrists, but that wouldn't negate leg presses,
Nautilus machines or any machines where the weight is moved by
pressing the arms, forearms, traps, back, etc. against pads - peck
deck, reverse delt machine, calf raises, shrugs on a calf machine,
etc.

[...]

Buy the book. Read the book. Please post a follow-up.

The abbreviated oldster wisdom is that the cure for smallness is
squats and milk.

More squats, less milk :).

> Everything I eat goes straight to my stomach. Bad genes I guess.

From a health and wellness standpoint maintaining your weight around
135 for 30 years is *great* genes. Most people have the opposite
problem.

> The last time I really tried to gain weight, I was working out with
> weights at the time.

Two things. There are lots of ways to train with weights, and not all
of them are conducive to adding a lot of muscle mass. What's more,
gaining lots of muscle without putting on a bit of fat is apparently
pretty hard. I wouldn't know personally. I started my weight
training odyssey very overweight :).

That being the case, My recommendation for just about everyone wanting
to start lifting weights is to simply continued to eat as you are now
and add a weight training program formulated around your goals. For
example, you want to add weight. So you simply pick some compound
exercises and do 1-2 sets of 8-12 reps with each exercise three days a
week. Here are some good exercises.

Bench Press
Bent Over Row
Deadlift
Squats
Pullup
Overhead Press

Start light and learn to do the lifts correctly. Then try and add
weight to the bar (or do more reps) every time you lift.

If you have ever been a jogger you will quickly learn that lifting
weights does not make you feel like running does. Instead of feeling
tired you will often actually feel invigorated after a workout.
That's fine, just stick to the workout and get your rest so that your
body can grow.

> Still, every lb went straight to my waist. I can't lift a lot of

I am not a doctor, nor do I play one on TV. Only an idiot would
consider anything I have to say as some sort of medical advice. That
being the case, lifting heavy weights has been the best thing ever for
my wrists. Before I started lifting I had serious problems with my
wrists including severe tendonitis. I was afraid that I was going to
have to get some other job because even typing began to be painful.
Strengthening my wrists took quite a while, but it was precisely what
my wrists needed.

If you do a lift and it hurts, then you either need to try some other
variant or you need to use less weight. Your body will adapt.

> I know that if I start eating a lot more, no matter what I eat, it's
> all going to my middle.

So just start by lifting weights and see what happens. If you like
the results then keep after it. If you don't then fine tune your diet
and exercise.

> yrs old. Any suggestions will be greatly appreciated.
> Rick Thomas

Lift something heavy 3 times a week for a month and see what happens.
Don't forget to check in with your results or to ask questions.

Name five top bodybuilders that trained with a guy who had a giant tumor
growing out of his arm, collapsed lungs, kidney stents, and a host of other
illnesses?

Name the articles that you wrote which were published in bodybuilding
magazines. I presume you don't mean fan letters?

Name the many bodybuilding shows that you won. I only know of your third
place showing in the Mr. Santa Monica in 1988.

Its summer, Shute.

You see those lovely 20-25 year olds walk by, with barely any clothes on,
and then you realize that you could be their father.

And you start look like their father!

Hi everyone,
I'd like to thank everyone for all the positive responses. I really
appreciate it.
I guess I need to explain my situation a little better. Although I've
always been a thin person,
I've never really done any serious weight lifting. And I've never
really had a problem with the way
I looked. But that was before my accident. I've had 2 surgeries on my
left wrist and one on my right
wrist. Also, I had surgery on my shoulder. I was pretty much helpless
for quite a while. Spent a long time
in rehab. So anyway, being banged up with pins sticking out of me
everywhere, I naturally lost weight. And muscle.
And quite a bit of my strength.I've been slowly gaining weight, but
not much strength. Right now I'm working with 20 lb
dumbbells. I'm really more interested in gaining strength then in
bulking up. But when I gain weight, I would like to gain muscle and
not fat. And you're right, I was eating crap, pretty much anything and
everything.
Well anyway, thanks again for all the positive replies.
One more thing, I probably should ignore the person with the smartass
remark, but I just have one thing to say.
I bought my wife roses(her favorite) Feburary 14, 2007. Two days
later, I had to pick out flowers for her funeral.
So before you reply to someone else's post, maybe you should think
before you speak. (And grow up)

I have a bad wrist (not as bad as yours, apparently, but anyway...).

If you haven't already, you should experiment with some wrist straps.
They'll allow you to grip a bar with much less effort than normal.

Who knows, they might help. Just google 'wrist straps' to see what they
are, if you're not familiar with them.
