Protein Powder Processing

Hi everyone,

I'm wondering if anyone has any insight on how harsh the processing is
of various protein powders such as Whey as well as Whole Egg, and Egg
White.

I do understand that there are a tonne of studies that suggest that
whey protein has a high absorption in the body and has all the immune
system enhancing effects.

HOWEVER,

Common sense tells me that whey is made from cooked milk (pasteurized)
which must exert a negative effect on the amino acids. Furthermore, it
is then processed to separate the protein from the carbs and fats.
>From my research, this is done by using either acids (hydrochloric?) or
enzymes. Since I am primarily interested in an Isolate, after this
concentrated protein is separated from the other fats/carbs it is then
put through a CFM filtration that is done under cold conditions.

My question is, after all of this -- how is it possible that a healthy
product exists? Would there not be severe denaturing from the initial
pasteurization, as well as cross linking between amino acids?

With respect to the egg processing. I understand that a similar
process occurs. The eggs are spray dried under heat. With the egg
protein, would the heat and exposure to air heavily oxidize the
cholesterol causing oxycholesterol which is foreign/toxic to the body?
I suppose this wouldn't occur with the egg white powder but then there
is the entire issue with avidin leeching biotin from your body,
although I suppose this is nullified by pasteurization.

Any knowledge on this topic would be greatly appreciated.

Fair enough, so I guess the only thing that bothers me is the way they
isolate the protein from the fat and carbs by either using acids or
enzymes.

Just another question i'm curious about -- why is it that pure isolated
whey protein is white? Why is creatine white? Glutamine white?
BCAA's white? Do they bleach them or something? Or is this just the
colour of aminos?

And also what about the free form glutamic acid that is produced as a
byproduct of processing? It seems that whey contains something very
similar to msg that can be excitotoxic to the brain?

I didn't know cheese had 1g of free glutamic acid acid per 100g.
Regardless, I don't eat cheese because I can't find any no or low
sodium cheese.

DZ, whey isolate CFM has 12g's of glutamic acid per 100g. Now, i'm not
sure if this is free form or bound. If it is the latter, it isn't a
problem. I'm just wondering how much is free form as this could very
much be a significant amount (3g per scoop).

Thanks.

What's your problem? Has the glutamate indeed affected your brain?
Listen buddy, there is no need to be a bitch, i'm just asking some
straight forward questions here.

Furthermore, I don't realize how much glutamate I consume every day.
I'm not concerned with bounded glutamic acid or how much I "convert" as
you put it. I'm just concerned with free form glutamic acid as it is
toxic to the brain such as msg.

No, you're not. Your so-called "straight forward questions" are
loaded with erroneous and hysterical presumptions.

There's one. MSG hysteria. Aside from a few people who are
hypersensitive, MSG is not problematic. It is not "toxic" to the
brain in any normal amount, nor can you produce any *reliable* study
that establishes that it is.

That's my problem, buddy. I can sense weenies like you in the first

Hypersensitive or not, I don't want to pollute my body if I can help it
-- and especially not PAY for it. Regardless, the point that it is not
problematic is only your opinion. Thanks for letting me know that 3
grams of glutamic acid poses no problems...I appreciate your opinion.

Now, I look forward to what "erroneous" and "hysterical" presumptions
i've made. I just want other people's intelligent opinions (unlike
yours) and you've said enough, so thanks again.

As David Cohen has suggested, the sodium in most cheese won't bother
most healthy people. We are big fans of store-bought, store-brand, as
plain as it gets, extra-sharp cheddar cheese in my house. Both my kids
like to eat the stuff plain - slice or grate it, then eat it, no
sandwich or anything else to get in the way.

No thanks. I like to keep my sodium at healthy levels. From his posts
he's obviously suffering from hypertension. Cheese is LOADED with it
and even though I have no health issues, I would rather keep it that
way. I treat sugar the same way. No i'm not fat, and I rather eat it

Please feel free to tell us what constitutes a healthy level of sodium.
Surely the level of sodium in most foods today is of outrageous
quantity.

Regardless, todays sodium intake is at levels higher than any time in
history.

And with respect to cheese, 6oz of cheddar has over 1000mg's of sodium,
which is why I don't eat it.

Perhaps he does, but he doesn't have to come across as such an asshole
making his points. Regardless, the original post had nothing to do
with this and would like more opinions on the whey powder --
processing, quality of the proteins, potentially too much free form
glutamic acid etc.

The latter. Basically, most substances are colourless - it's only if they
have funky molecular orbitals that they absorb light in the visible
spectrum. In practice, 'funky' means d orbitals, as found in compounds of
transition metals like iron, copper nickel, etc, or highly conjugated pi
orbitals, as found in complex unsaturated organic compounds. Amino acids,
including creatine, are all simple organic molecules, and don't have the
magic orbitals; the same goes for sugars. Proteins and complex
carbohydrates are more complex, but don't have much in the way of pi
orbitals; they're just big, rather than having funky bonding. Fats are
reasonably big, and are sometimes unsaturated, but generally not enough
that they have visible colour - you need a bunch of unsaturated, ie
double, bonds next to each other to get colour (as in beta-carotene, for
example, which looks like a fat gone wild).

So now you know.

Imo, the possession of so-called pop-health preconceived notions has

I'm not sure if you are all here to argue or what. I really don't care
about the sodium issue. I would like more opinions on whey protein
isolate cold filtered. Do the body/muscles benefit from this protein
or not? Is it all "damaged" protein from the heating, acids,
filtering, etc. or are they good aminos rich in BCAA's? I have
researched a tonne and haven't found too much in the negatives.

The negatives on the powders I have found from researching the Weston
Price Foundation.

What about free form BCAA's? Waste of money because they don't do
anything, or effective pre and post workout?

You know, for having a RN, medic, BS, and 20 years experience, you
certainly don't come across as it. You either are severely fucked in
the head or have major short man syndrome. It's typical that you
continue to resort to name calling when someone questions the status
quo. I have noticed your attacks in other posts on other people and
like the other poster said, nothing more than a bunch of idiocy. You
are nothing more than a troll that seeks attention. You need help.
You have a severe mental disorder and should check yourself in as soon
as possible. Unfortunatley that won't even help, so you continue to
slam others in order to boost your own pathetic existence.

Why don't you just shut the fuck up for once? If you don't have
anything good or positive to say then don't say anything at all. You
sure didn't learn much in your time at school and in life. Let me
guess, you don't have many friends either do you, for surely if you
acted toward others the way you do here you certainly wouldn't get very
far.

You figured that out allready?

About the sodium...
It is generally accepted that too much can lead to health problems...

HOWEVER,

A Dutch doctor, who supervised the National Soccer-team in Florida, 1994,
concluded that under certain circumstances, lets say, swichting to a
moderate sea climate to a tropical one, it would be BETTER to INcrease the
sodium intake, along with lots of water, to keep blood pressure DOWN.

This might also be a good suggestion for the elderly, when temperatur rises
above 30 degrees celcius.

But why are you worried about that? Because you heard that glutamates
are "bad" cuz that's what in monosodium glutamate (MSG), and everybody
*knows* how "bad" that is!

You see, that's the problem with guys like you. You pick up these
little pop-health factoids (which are often the results of junk
science hysteria, anyway), and without any overall understanding of
human physiology, you try to apply them by asking pseudo-informed
"questions" loaded with crappy presumptions. Yes, massive amounts of
sodium and glutamate in your diet can be harmful. By the same token,
sodium and glutamate are absolutely essential to you maintaining your
existence.

Whey protein contains glutamic acid. It really doesn't matter how
much is "free form" because the protein will be broken down into its
constituent amino acids in the gut, anyway. Or are you one of those
rocket scientists who thought that whole proteins just passed through
the gut in one long string? And what happens to glutamic acid when
it's broken down in the gut? Ninety-five percent is metabolized by
the cells of the gut; that's its biggest physiological function. So
how much do you really need to worry about going to the brain and
creating exitotoxicity?

What you really need to worry about is learning more about the subject
matter and not making nutritional decisions on little chunks of
information that are totally separated from the overall function.

When I was a kid we used to play a game where we would put on our
heavy Levi jackets and jeans, spray hairspray on our arms and legs,
wait for a car to come, and then light our arms and legs on fire and
then run across the road screaming and waving our arms. We had a
really good place to hide across the road so one moment you would see
a group of young boys running across the road in front of you on fire,
and the next they would all be gone.

We stopped this game after my brother got ambitious and sprayed
hairspray all over the back of his jacket and accidentally lit his
hair on fire. Fortunately he had a crew cut at the time so he didn't
get hurt very badly, but to this day he still doesn't really have
eyebrows. It's possible that this is a coincidence, but I have an
abundance of eyebrow.

To my knowledge that is these occasions are the only time I have ever
smoked :).

As for drinking vegetables, I don't generally like vegetable juice,
except, of course, for corn syrup. I'm not sure that counts as a
vegetable even though it is made from corn.

Seems like i can forget about actually seeing Orange steroids after this

But somehow, i suspect these diabolical scientiest found a way a to "bleach"

There's nothing at all "ahahahahahaha"about being a nurse. And there's

That's a quote from An Officer and a Gentleman, something like, "Oh,

Anyway, I thought that gun owners all had lots of friends. The larger

Come on... its not so bad.
I really think you got some answers, inluding the ones from John and David.
Who do not particularly seem to like you.

DZ responded to the initial post;

"Common sense tells me the concentration of crosslinked products is
hundreds times higher in a piece of grilled meat. And they are much
nastier there because of the presence of creatine in meat. But a part
of human evolution took place in an environment where fire was used in
food preparation. So an argument can be made that "it's all natural
for us"."

But then you followed up by asking a different question;

"Just another question i'm curious about -- why is it that pure isolated
whey protein is white? Why is creatine white? Glutamine white?
BCAA's white? Do they bleach them or something? Or is this just the
colour of aminos?"

Did you read Toms post? I did. Very interesting...

Trust me when i say that this NG can provide you with a shitload of
information about nutrition and training.
I wont even mention the pharmacueticals.

If *I* wanted to know something about certain aminos/whey protein/sodium, i
would ask it here. And within 12 hours, i will get at least 10 good answers,
if not more.

But if you whould ask me what my opinion of ethystrenol is, i would say its
pretty fucking useless for a man. If you answer by saying that in your
opinion its a very good AS, i would stop the conversation.
I hope you understand the above example...

Good post Pete, and you're right. I did receive info and thanks for
that. I now realize that glutamate in whey powder is negligable and
cross linking aminos are not an issue. I guess i'll just hope that the
protein that Pureprotein.com has isn't treated with chemicals to form
the concentrate. After that it's all done under a "cold environment"
apparently through the CFM.

With respect to the egg powder, I already know the answer. There is
alot of oxidized cholesterol in there so i'll just stick to real eggs
and supplement with whey.

Thanks for the help (and the entertainment).

Mr. Brink,

It's a pleasure to have you in this newsgroup. In fact, I read that
article during my researching of whey proteins. This is why I settled
for whey isolate CFM cold filtered if I get any powder at all.

I have not looked at your website in depth but will assume you have
nothing to gain from promoting powders. Would you say that in your
honest opinion and expertise, that using a whey isolate will positively
enhance one's gains and health if they already have a decent amount of
protein in the diet?

I have already ruled out casein and egg powders for health reasons, so
only remains whey isolate CFM cold filtered....or nothing. I did alot
of googling on this newsgroup and found that someone (Lyle?) indicates
that whey digests too fast. I found this snippet too that "Lyle"
wrote:

"whey is vastly overrated and I have the clinical research to totally
prove it.
Casein is a much better general use protein.
Jeff Feliciano and I are going to write an article about it for Flex. "

So as you can see, i'm a little confused on whether whey is worth to
take or not. Your honest answer is greatly appreciated.

When it comes to nutrition i would trust both Lyle and Will...

But... just out of curiousity, why are making such a big deal about the whey
protein?
Like i said, just curiues.

For myself, i make "protein" shakes with skimmed milk, added by whole *milk*
powder, NOT protein powder, and a few bananas. I get the rest of my protein
from eggs, fish, meat. I can assure, you i get a LOT of protein.

Once or twice a year, during several "periods", i like to add Whey to my
shakes.
One shake an hour before the the workout, and one shake after. Thats it.

Basically because I don't want to spend money for something that does
either nothing, or hinders my health. It's the same reason i'm
critical about fish oil, other supplements, etc. I like to gather as
much knowledge as I can myself in order to make an informed critical
decision instead of just going by what the masses believe.

Why only once or twice per year? Why not more often? Or is it because
you are cutting or bulking at certain times?

So overall, i'm assuming you are making decent gains WITHOUT whey
powder, yes? So, if you would add the powder would it:

1. help gain more
2. give you --too much-- protein
3. do nothing

Seems like we have something in common.

I HATE to spend money on gimmicks that dont work. Which is why i use a
cheap, generic multi/vit/min tab everyday.
And lots of protein from animal sources.
The fish oil i get is from sandwisches with sardines, and a raw haring every
nowc and then.
(we eat raw fish over here...)
And of course the steak is consumed medium/rare.

>> Once or twice a year, during several "periods", i like to add Whey to my

>> One shake an hour before the the workout, and one shake after. Thats it.

> Why only once or twice per year? Why not more often? Or is it because

Oh.
Because i increase the intake of protein while on steroids. I increase the
intake in food a bit, and throw a few extra spoons in the shakes. I am NOT
gonna eat 7 times a day. No way.

> So overall, i'm assuming you are making decent gains WITHOUT whey
> powder, yes?

I became aware of "Whey" protein because i read it here in this NG, about 6
years ago.
Before that i consumed mainly "plain" milk protein. And still do.
2 liters of skimmed milk and some whole milk powder. Very cheap AND very
effective.

I made *excellent* gains without Whey.
I mean, come on... the stuff was considered a side "effect" for years, and
now its the magic bullet?

> So, if you would add the powder would it:

> 1. help gain more
> 2. give you --too much-- protein

I suspect 1
But i do it, because fore me its very convienient.
An extra steak, 200 grams or so, or 6 extra eggs would have the same effect.
Although i have to admit that the quick "absorption" might help a bit.

I know people who spend a few hundred Euros each month on Whey, and dont
gain anything.
Stick to regular milk protein, and use the Whey to supplement that. Best
option i think.

Well, if you can find a chemist of fortune around your parts, you might be
able to get him to knock one up. Maybe stick a carboxyl group on the
3-position of beta-carotene, then esterify it to one of the hydroxyls on
the steroid, and hope that cellular esterases knock it off; might even
improve the pharmacodynamics ...

Okay, enough some-way-beyond-the-stuff-i-really-know-about chemistry.

Ach, we're rumbled!
