You should read more Douglas Adams.

No. I also never watched their tv show(s) and the ONLY movie of
theirs that I've seen is The Meaning of Life. I never watched or "got
into" Monty Python. I was, and still am, a Benny Hill fan.

I've seen one of them.

I got a fortune cookie a while ago that contained the message "Don't Panic"

I kept that one.

Is that the only time it is used in any of the HHGTTG creations?

There's "hooptiously" in the Vogon poetry, but other than that, I think
so.

It's an interesting question, there must be a Hitchipedia out there,
but I have a (possibly false) memory of it being used in a couple of
places in the radio show.

In the book Gulp, Mary Roach says that when prisoners (and others) put
things in their rectum to smuggle they calling it "hooping"
http://www.sfchronicle.com/books/article/Roach-s-Gulp-The-grosser-the-better-4406875.php

"...what gave her the idea to explore our intestines. "I met this
gastroenterologist at a party and asked him what was the most interesting
thing about his job," she said. His answer was swift: the anus. Nobody
respects it, but it is a fascinating body part, he said, so sensitive it can
detect pressure from solid, liquid or gas, and know whether to release or
hold back.

She even sat down with a prisoner at Avenal State Prison to discuss
"hooping," slang for smuggling contraband (often drugs or smartphones) in
the rectum. From start to finish, she wanted to know everything no one ever
thought to ask about the lowly gut.

When our cocktails arrived, Roach took a sip and exhaled out her nose.
"Rose petals," she said, then showed me a technique she learned from a
Harley-driving "sensory analyst" who detects scents for a living. Roach told
me to exhale through my nose while drinking, so the volatiles in the gin
wafted up to my olfactory epithelium, the "internal nostrils," at the top of
my nasal cavity.
I sipped. I snorted, and bam! I was bowled over by the scent of my
great-grandmother's rose hand cream, plus a hint of Big Sur sage. The human
tongue perceives only five tastes: sweet, bitter, salt, sour and unami
(brothy). Nearly 90 percent of the sensory experience of eating comes from
an infinite number of smells, according to the first chapter in "Gulp."

We glanced at the menu, and I was horrified. Crispy pig ear is seasonal,
apparently. No longer on the menu. Roach was unfazed, instead choosing the
fried Brussels sprouts, which she likes because they create some of the most
noxious flatus. Really. They've done studies. With special Mylar pantaloons
that trap the gas. Roach was in the lab. "Women's gas has higher
concentrations of hydrogen sulfide, so professional odor judges say women's
gas smells worse," Roach said. "But men make up for it in production
volume." The people next to us were pretending not to listen.

We ordered sweet and spiced nuts because Roach wanted me to experience
"marker foods." "Thirty hours from now, you'll say hi again," Roach said. I
offered to report back.

I asked Roach whether her eating habits had changed since writing her book.
"I don't take a throat lozenge before I go to bed," she said. "I could fall
asleep and swallow it." It's a killer. The most dangerous food on Earth,
according to experts who talked to Roach, are round foods that match the
shape of the airway - especially lozenges, hot dogs and grapes. "I don't
give out hard candy to kids anymore," she said.

And she's taking ideas for her next book, trying to figure out what she has
yet to explore about our bodies. "What about dreams?" I offered. "I thought
about it, but it's too boring," she said. "The research is watching someone
be comatose for eight hours. And what's worse than listening to someone tell
you about their dreams?"

Yeah, not gross enough. Unless one is dreaming about swimming through the
intestine. It was time to say goodbye. We kissed on the cheek, and Roach had
one last tip:"If you get a colonoscopy, you should really insist they give
you no drugs - then you do get to see what it's like to swim through your
own intestines."
