I'm sure for some they are, for me they werent. The problem is that
school isnt interested in creativity. The present classroom setup
simply irons it all out. When it does occasionally survive it is
because of the creative drive and strongheadedness of the student.
If you want creativity, art and music might help keep a little alive
for those that would otherwise lose it all, but a far better approach
would be to embrace creativity into the main education process.
A good way to do this is to allow each student to learn from material
on computer, with access to a shared live teacher, and each student is
free to follow the subjects and areas they want, in whatever order
they want, and using whichever computerised teacher or site they want.
In this model the student has a creative idea, then goes and finds out
about it - and is motivated by their own interest to do so. They keep
following what interests them, and are encouraged by their creativity
instead of today being at best ignored in class, and at worst being
told to stop wasting time and get on with the job, and getting
bullied.
What I envision is an enclosed or limited web where many teachers
prepare pages and sites for students covering the whole gamut of that
which is relevant to students, and the student is simply let loose
within that web. Learning is interest driven and need driven - but by
the student.
One way to work this is to use a closed net, with teachers material
placed there after review and approval.
Another possible is to use the present internet, adding sites to the
accessible list after avaluating them one by one. This version allows
a much wider range of input, it allows anyone to be a teacher without
needing to have any connection with the school system or be employed
by them. A snapshot copy of each accepted site would be transferred to
the accessible list, rather than the live site itself, so that no site
could then change its content to something ill suited. This option
would open up the range of material and knowledge greatly.
The availability of many teaching styles within this web means that in
a little time each student will usually find out which approach(es) to
learning suit them best, and use them. They will become aware of the
differing approaches, and learn to prescreen information to choose
which presentations fit the approaches to learning that suit them
best. This is something that is barely addressed nowadays, with
students being given only one option, which inevitably varies greatly
in how suitable it is for each person. We are all familiar with the
phenomenon of some students finding a particular teacher they do well
with: with students selecting from an array of teachers they can pick
what suits them far more often, as there are lots of teachers to
freely choose from. The result will be much greater achievement in
education.
Even those who today have no interest in classroom learning will
quickly find things that interest them, and interest will grow and
spread. Those who today have no interest in anything taught in class
tend to gravitate initially towards things like sex education,
criminal forensics, the criminal justice system, debates about drugs,
etc, and as they enjoy learning they soon find they want to know more
about things, and they discover that there are valid subjects that
interest them after all.
Those that can learn at a faster pace than others around them will do
so, to their great benefit. Those that can learn much harder material
than those around them will do so, again to their great benefit.
Those that can only learn something at a slower pace than others
around them will do that, resulting in understanding instead of just
confusion. Presently we all experience this some of the time, and all
fail to grasp many concepts in school because of some particular
problem we have with it at that moment. This is a prime reason why our
school exam results are so low, because we didnt get a significant
proportion of it.
If you think about it, exam results should be close to 100% most of
the time. If the student has been taugh something successfully, ie
when they understand it, they should be able to answer the questions
on it, barring the odd mistake and forgotten bits. This is what I
expect when teaching, 80 to 100%. If a student only gets 60% then
clearly they dont understand a lot of the material. Yet today many can
only aspire to get 60%. And many have given up thinking they ever
will.
Getting near 100% most of the time translates to a huge increase in
confidence, and total banishment of that feeling of hopelessness that
most students feel, most some of the time, and some nearly all the
time. This hopelessness and frustration is a real big barrier to
learning today, and is not hard to banish.
In short this system totally changes the mindset of the student, and
dramatically changes the individuals level of achievement. And most of
the time it rewards them for their creativities with interest, and
positively encourages more.

Flowers are Red Lyrics

Flowers are Red Lyrics
(Spoken)Your son marches to the beat of a different drummer, comer.
(Spoken)But don't worry,
(Spoken)We'll have him joining the parade by the end of the term
The little boy went first day of school
He got some crayons and started to draw
He put colors all over the paper
For colors was what he saw
And the teacher said.. What you doin' young man
I'm paintin' flowers he said
She said... It's not the time for art young man
And anyway flowers are green and red
There's a time for everything young man
And a way it should be done
You've got to show concern for everyone else
For you're not the only one
And she said...
Flowers are red young man
Green leaves are green
There's no need to see flowers any other way
Than they way they always have been seen
But the little boy said...
There are so many colors in the rainbow
So many colors in the morning sun
So many colors in the flower and I see every one
Well the teacher said.. You're sassy
There's ways that things should be
And you'll paint flowers the way they are
So repeat after me.....
And she said...
Flowers are red young man
Green leaves are green
There's no need to see flowers any other way
Than they way they always have been seen
But the little boy said...
There are so many colors in the rainbow
So many colors in the morning sun
So many colors in the flower and I see every one
The teacher put him in a corner
She said.. It's for your own good..
And you won't come out 'til you get it right
And are responding like you should
Well finally he got lonely
Frightened thoughts filled his head
And he went up to the teacher
And this is what he said.. and he said
Flowers are red, green leaves are green
There's no need to see flowers any other way
Than the way they always have been seen
Time went by like it always does
And they moved to another town
And the little boy went to another school
And this is what he found
The teacher there was smilin'
She said...Painting should be fun
And there are so many colors in a flower
So let's use every one
But that little boy painted flowers
In neat rows of green and red
And when the teacher asked him why
This is what he said.. and he said
Flowers are red, green leaves are green
There's no need to see flowers any other way
Than the way they always have been seen.
But there still must be a way to have our children say . . .
There are so many colors in the rainbow
So many colors in the morning sun
So many colors in the flower and I see every one
