July 17, four months before the 2017 election, when Roginsky pulled
Murphy aside and told him that he had a problem, that the men on his
campaign were harassing the women, creating the most toxic
atmosphere she had ever witnessed, and pointing first at campaign
manager Brendan Gill, whom she accused of screaming the C-word at
her, a charge that Gill denies.
Roginsky told Murphy that several other women on the campaign were
coming to her in distress with similar complaints, and if the
governor would agree to protect them, she would give him the details
and names, she says.
Two days later, Murphy called to fire her, with no explanation, she
says. The next day, a campaign attorney called to remind her that
she was bound by a gag order.
The rest is history. Several women came forward, some anonymously,
with stories of temper tantrums and thrown chairs, with pornographic
jokes and talk of strip clubs during meetings, and in one case, with
an unwelcome stroke of the thigh. In public, Murphy said Roginsky
and other women were free to talk, but at the same time, campaign
lawyers sent Roginsky e-mails warning her to keep quiet. Some women
quit in protest, claiming retaliation over their complaints.
Then it got worse. Katie Brennan, a campaign volunteer, charged that
a senior campaign official, Al Alvarez, raped her. After a deeply
flawed investigation, prosecutors decided not to press charges.
