Hi,

I think I've read somewhere that the periodic table is given, but are
constants list (gen chem, physics) given? How about formulas?

And how complete are these lists?

Thanks,
J

Periodic Table is given, if I remember correctly, but a constants list and
formula list are unavailable. In each passage, hwoever, the constants and
forumlas are provided on a need-to-know basis (which is determined by the
author of that passage).

The periodic table is not that helpful.

From my experience teaching, here is a short list of constants I
recommend you SHOULD know for the MCAT (i.e. ones that may NOT be
provided for you). This is off the top of my head and is in
approximate order of importance:
1. Gravity = 9.8 (10) (any questions?)
2. Speed of light = 3 x 10^8 m/s (I would *know* this!)
3. Needless to say you should know the value (1) and units of the
density, specific gravity, and specific heat of water. Also know
density of water in SI units: 1000 kg/m^3
4. Volume of 1 mole of gas at STP: 22.4 L -- know this!
5. 0 C = 273 K
6. Avogrado's Number (6.03 x 10^23, they might give it to you but I
wouldn't count on it)
7. Acid/Base Water constant (Kw) = 1 x 10^-14. Knowing its value
isn't as important as knowing how to use it of course, but I would
know both.

These are all constants but they are also concepts and/or definitions
that happen to center around a specific value. It is those types of
instances where I would know the constant and, of course, the
definition the constant describes.

And here are so common constants you do NOT need to know and are
always provided for you: The gas constant (R), Planck's Constant,
Faraday Constant, Gravitational Constant... can't think of any more
right now...

I can literally say, as someone who scored very well on the MCAT, that I didn't
need to know ANY constants, nor did I need to look at the provided periodic
table.

The MCAT is not about remembering obscure (or not so obscure) data, but rather
how you analyze data given to you and respond. Of course, there are the
"independent questions" that ask you for knowledge you have to pull out of
memory. These questions are fairly easy. The only equation that I had to use
was the refraction equation (Index of refaction*angle of incidence(start)*angle
of refraction*angle of incidence(end)=constant).

Not that this is going to be the case for everyone, but people must take this
test in perspective. Your analytical skills are what is going to be challenged,
not your memorizing prowess....

Wonderful advice. This certainly mirrors what was on my exam when I took it
April, 97. BTW, the calculator is not needed because be the time you get to
crunching the numbers, it is simple to do it in your head/on paper.

Good luck!

Scotty is a very restrained and knowing source of information. We
strongly recommend that you follow his advice.

Um DO I know you? O I guess we already established that... well I
guess I probably should (?) know you. You have characterized me to a
T. My GAWD how did you guess? Do you know the size of my penis,
too??

Don't get me wrong; I'm not insulted (in fact I'm flattered), but I'm
not aroused either.

Yes. You came into the STD clinic I was working at last summer...just
kidding Scotty. Seriously, you do have a nice one--I won't deny that.
Even if I only knew you through your postings I'd know that; I'm pretty
good at sizing a man up. Guys with little bent penis' tend to write
cynical and/or arrogant posts--yours are neither. By the way, to the
rest of you guys out there, size does matter (but not in the way you
probably think).

Scotty, your take on the MCAT is correct; I used a similar approach had
(considerable) success.

I guess I don't have what it takes. I am actually worried that after a
year of sitting around all day studying in med school, I'm getting out
of shape. I stopped working out and gained almost 5 pounds, and I think
it all went into my bottom. I'd be interested in you honest opinion on
this Scotty, do I have a "big butt"? (see the post regarding pictures of
m.e.m. contributors I made yesterday).

Love,
Shelly

According to the photograph you've already generously supplied me
with, your ass is quite shapely -- both of you, that is. Please
forward all ensuing correspondence to alt.sex.useless.never.

Whatever you say Scotty. But remember that you were the one that
raised the issue of the size of your penis in response to our compliment
regarding your advice on the MCAT.
