Soffits or Siding? Which to do first?

I am planning to have my house re-sided and have a complete re-do of the
soffits and siding as well. I will probably have to do one before the
other. The question is which? Is there anything about installing vinyl
soffits and siding that makes one better done before the other?

Thanks in advance

I'd do the soffits first.

In my experience, the "F" track that holds the vinyl soffits covers
the nails used to install the top trim track of the siding. That
would explain why we always do the siding first.

butted to the soffit J channel, possible disadvantage would be a place for
water to get in the walls.

I stand corrected. The nails in the top trim piece of the siding are
covered by the siding. You can in fact install the siding and soffits
in any order - just make sure to mark the soffit elevation before
installing the siding.

You can really do either first. If you do the siding first, make sure you
level back and snap a line where you want the j-channel for the soffit to
be, then stop the siding finish trim off there. If you have any gables, you
would do the same things, mark off where the soffit jchannel needs to be,
then stop the siding j-channel off at the line.

From what you have said, it seems to me that it might be better to do
the soffits, fascia, and gutters before the siding. I will only be able
to one or the other the first year. $$$$

That's wrong. I hope you aren't nailing the f-channel through the siding.
You should always use the correct utility trim. In this case you should
use finish trim for the top piece of siding. Afterall, finish trim is less
than $3 a piece, so it makes no sense to cut corners and do it incorrectly.
