Does anyone own this unit and can give me some info abt
it such as how you like it?
We have two C90's -- recommended to us as the best value for money at
the time (maybe five years ago). I can't say whether it's true! I'm
assuming that the C90A is a later-greater variant of what we have.
My only comments are: (1) The box is a lot bigger than it looks in
that picture, so be aware that it'll take up some real space; (2) the
machine is remarkably quiet at "low." tolerable at "medium," and
obtrusive at "high" (but I've had small air filters that claim to be
quiet yet make a lot more noise on the "low" setting); (3) it seems to
work very well, at least on dust.

OK Mark thanks.
When you say it seems to work very well on the
dust..... how are you "gaging" that?
By how much dust is in it when you clean it out? Or
what?
I want to buy one of these units..... but at $450 I
want to make sure I am getting something that really
works before I do. <G>
I just ordered a Blueair myself this week.

Why did you go with BlueAir?
The ionization type filters like the Friedrich look very nice, but
I wouldn't have the patience to maintain the cleaning regimen.
Those collector-plate type of filters have a dramatic drop-off
in performance as the plates get dirty. Cleaning them is certainly
a lot cheaper than buying new HEPA filters, though.

OK..... but how long can you use the hepa filters
before needing to change them?? Just curious.
Having a hard time deciding with what "type" of unit to
go for. <grin>
Bottom line tho....would you say that using an air
cleaner.....ANY air cleaner.....has proven to ease you
allergies and discomfort?
Also... you use your sin the bedroom, correct?
Mark.....did you buy your C90's locally... or thru the
mail?
If thru the mail...who from?
That varies by manufacturer and unit. The Blueair is every 6
months, which can get expensive quickly. Other types change
only a prefilter every 3-6 months and the HEPA filter every
2-4 years. Either way, maintenance costs will outweigh initial
purchase cost after a few years. From that perspective the
Friedrich is very cost-effective.

That's the plan. If I notice a reduction in allergies after using
it in my bedroom continuously for a few weeks, I'm going to
buy one or two more (probably IQAir) for the main living
areas of the house.

OK.....hnaks for your input Neil.
I guess that is my plan of attack also. <G>
However.....I am leaning towards the Friedrich unit
Yeah, the crud when we clean 'em out _is_ pretty dramatic, but mostly
I'm gauging by how much better I breathe. No doubt the good HEPA
systems are even better, but we haven't felt cheated -- especially
since, as Neil points out, it's nice not to pay for filters over and
over and over again.
We actually didn't order these ourselves, so I can't tell you where
they came from! I'm pretty sure it was mail-order.

We bought this air cleaner back in January after reading about it in
Consumer Reports. They recommended it over the others in the report
largely because it has a washable electrostatic filter and it removed
more contaminants than the others.
It's a lot more expensive than HEPA-based air cleaners, but you don't
have any HEPA filters to buy, so in the long run it will be less
expensive, not to mention less of a hassle: my experience is that
finding various filters for air cleaners, humidifiers, etc. can be a
big hassle.
As far as its efficacy is concerned, it seems to work great - when we
cleaned the electrostatic filter, after about three months of mostly
continuous operation, the water was a very very dark brown (about the
color of strong coffee). Also, I've noticed that both the TV screen and
the computer monitor's screen need very little cleaning since the air
cleaner has been running. Finally, my wife sneezes a lot less often
now.
It's not noisy at low speed, making a not unpleasant low hum. The
manual recommends medium and high speed for "heavy" use. We haven't
found the need to use other than low speed.
Cleaning it is no big deal - we cleaned it after about three months of
mostly continuous operation, which seemed to be about the right amount
of time. Perhaps next time we'll clean it after two months considering
how dark was the water. If you have a dish washer, one big enough to
hold the filter, cleaning is pretty easy. If not, you have to soak it
in very hot water with a fairly strong concentration of detergent,
occasionally swishing the water, then rinse well.
BTW, the price at the link you provided is very good, assuming they
actually them in stock. We paid $449 for ours. We shopped around and
any store which claimed to have it for a (not very) lower price didn't
actually have any in stock, most claiming a wait of two months or so.

Water?
I didn't realize there was any water in these units!
How is water utilized in the unit???
I am pretty sure I will go ahead an buy one soon....
just making "sure". <G>
I think he was talking about the water used to clean off the filter,
not water that's used in the unit.

Good luck guys, I'll let you know how I like mine, they don't arrive
in stock for a few weeks...
