We're in the first steps of remodelling our kitchen and have been
advised to chose appliances first. So off we went to check out the
selections. I was amazed at the variety. Due to space constraints we
will be going the all-in-one range route with a gas cooktop and electric
convection oven. The three manufacturers we have narrowed the selection
down to are Viking, Dacor and Thermador. Moreover, we are leaning
toward a Dacor "Epicure" range.

We are looking for feedback from others that have gone through this
exercise. Does one of these manufacturers stand out as being better
than the others? Thanks.

We've got a Dacor gas cooktop which we really like. We also have a
thermador electric convection double oven which we really like. I
don't think you can go wrong with either brand. I can't comment on
Viking though.

We have a Thermador gas cooktop with bbq/grill in our house. The unit _looks_
real nice, but (1) its a real pain to keep clean and (2) the burners are big.

The issue with keeping the unit clean is that the cast iron grate that goes
over the burners is rather heavy. Once thats moved there is no easy way
to wipe up any stuff that falls onto to the cooktop surface.

The size of the burners is also a problem. Some of our pots are small and they
simply do not work well on this cooktop. The flame is bigger than the bottom
of the pot and ends up heating the handle and sides of the pot rather than the
bottom of the pot.

Aside from the looks of the Thermador cooktop there really is not anything
I particularly like about it.

On the plus side we also have a Thermador vent and electric convection ovens,
and we are very pleased with them. The vent has a very powerful motor that
will easily remove any cooking fumes. The oven is very nice, it regulates
its temp well.

If you have any specific question feel free to send me direct email.

And I review spammers briefly before killfiling them.

As a self-taught chef, I'm always interested in kitchen stuff. And I asked
someone a few months ago about the same kind of question. They said that
Viking spends more money on marketing and advertising than any of the other
range companies combined, and THAT is why they are so popular. But when it
comes to durability, features, and ease of use, they are waaaay behind most
of the others.

Things to look for: 1) How easy will the cooktop be to clean? Can the
dividers between the burners be removed? If not, then you'll be picking
food out of each burner every time you clean. If you can remove the
dividers, it's easier to wipe it all down.

2) How durable are the knobs? On the Viking, they tend to snap off or strip
out.

There are a few other things, but for the life of me I can't remember what
they were.

You should also check out rec.food.cooking and post the question. THOSE
guys are serious about this kind of thing, and you'll get a range of
answers (pardon the pun).
