I tried this without success. Your best bet -- replace
the cartridge in the faucet. Pop off the decorative
plastic cover on the top of the handle, then remove the
screw holding the handle. The directions with the
new cartridge should give the rest of the info you need.

We had the same problem with our Moen kitchen faucet. I tried lub'ing
it with plumbers grease, then replaced the cartridge. Nothing helped
much for very long. Finally I replaced it with a Price-Pfister
with a ceramic valve (guarenteed for life!) Am very happy now.
(You know why it's called "Moen"? It is from "Ah shoot- broken
again! Moan...")

There should be a button on the top of the handle that can be popped out
with a knife or something. You then take the screw out and pull off the
hanlde. Now TURN OFF THE WATER under the sink, or at your main valve.
There's a retainer clip that should be visible near the stem, and you pry
it off before you can pull the cartridge.
Now try to pull the cartridge out by holding the stem with pliers. If it
doesn't come out with a little wiggling, you have to do a few extra steps.
The top of the cartridge has ears on it, seen from the top. Take a
longnose pliers and try to turn those ears. This will free the cartridge.
If that doesn't work, and you can't get a good wrenching motion on the ears,
you need the cartridge removal tool, which I think is Moen part #13102.
All it is is a little plastic cap that fits the ears, and has a box on it
for a wrench.
Once the cartridge is out, you can either replace the O-rings and other
rubber parts (repair kits at better hardware stores), or just clean and
re-lube everything. Use Moen's silicone grease, part #11181, applied to
all the O-rings and the grooves in the stem. Put everything back in
reverse order, and work the handle a bit before turning the water on.
This should smooth things out. Probably best to do this every couple years.
If the stem is really eroded or crusted with minerals, replace it. They
make plastic ones as well.
Call Moen's consumer help line, which was 1.800.321.6636 as of 1988.
They may send you the grease and 362 <--Ohio residents
plastic part free, if the faucet is
under the ten year or lifetime warranty.
