During the late '50s I remember electroluminescent night lights. They
consisted of a flat panel with wall plug prongs on the back. The light
emitting side of the panel reflected a grey to green-blue pastel and likewise
emitted the green-blue pastel at night. It was solid state, emitted no
heat, and was practically flush to the wall.

Does anyone know where I can get these things now? Thanks!

I'll be darned if I know!
I know of no retail chain that carries them, which is odd since
electroluminescent technology has advanced a lot -
they're used a lot for backlighting LCD displays.
They're usually green or blue, but red is possible too.

I've seen panels by GE and Sylvania and they last virtually forever.
I think "Panelescent" is one of the brand-names.
No heat, but they're really dim.
The GE was the nicest since it was built into a 3-way outlet cube.

The funkiest ones I found were surplus at a computer show:
thin flexible strips with a Xerox part number, about 1" x 14"
and they work directly on house current.
Unfortunately it was a one shot deal.

At least neon nite lights are available - 1/3 watt, orange,
no heat and a bit brighter.

If anybody find them generally available, please mention the store.

Sigh - that sounds like Broosktone - they should be less than half that
if you could fine 'em anywhere else.

As fate would have it, I was just cleaning and found a curious nite light.
It doesn't occupy an outlet.
It looks like a white block with a plug on one end and
an outlet on the other. There's a neon bulb inside.
The light is weak so I'll have to replace the bulb (sigh)
but the case is fine after all these years.
Dey don't make 'dem like dat no more!

Herrington has them, too, for the same price, calling theirs the
"Limelight". Stock #T354, $14.95; for two or more, order it as Stock
#T355, $13.95. 1 (800) 622-5221.

Uh, yes, they do. It's a surge suppressor/spike protector/something like
that. They put them on our vending machines here at the office. Gotta
protect the _important_ equipment, you know...
