Any suggestions on how I might attempt to remove stains in our cultured
marble bathroom countertop caused by long-term contact with brown
plumber's putty?

We have decided to replace the lavatory faucets in our 7-year old house.
We are pulling out the one-piece lavatory faucets and replacing them
with three-piece "mini-spread" style faucets.

I had expected to see a color difference under the faucets - I thought
that the countertop might have changed color from exposure to sun, air,
whatever and the original color would be retained under the faucets.

I was suprised to find, however, that in lieu of rubber or plastic
gaskets under the original faucets, the installers had used a large
quantity of plumber's putty. This has stained the cultured marble and is
quite visible in the spaces not covered by the three-piece min-spread
type of faucet.

I was wondering what might be done to lessen or remove the yellow
staining. This would seem to be a classic "Hints from Heloise" or
home-repair type question, but several hours on the Internet hasn't
revealed any clues.

And of course, being the weekend, there is no way I can call any
cultured-marble places and see if they might have any advice.

For what it's worth, there are no markings on the underside of the
counter-top that might indicate the manufacturer.

Make a paste with bleach and plaster of paris. Apply to stain, cover with wax
paper, and let dry for a day or two. Remove and clean up. This works best for
water type stains, don't know about oil stains. This tip was given to me by a
high end marble installer, can't remember what he said about oil stains,
though.
