Hope this has not been discussed to death recently. If
it has, could someone direct me to the relevant FAQ?
Anyway, I am interested in buying and installing an
electric garage door opener. I found a 1988 Consumer
Reports article on garage door openers. The article
rated the Stanley model 3500 as a Best Buy. I have
also spoken to two people at hardware stores and
received contradictory advice about the relative merits
of chain drive versus screw drive openers. So, I guess
I would like to start a discussion about people's
experiences and recommendations about garage door openers.

Thanks.

A few years ago, I contacted Stanley's rep in Massachusettes
with an eye towards adding the remote controls to the list of
things our customers could have serviced at The Electronics
Workbench.

They sent some hot-shot who monopolized a whole morning saying
essentially, "We don't want customers to be able to get their
controls fixed - we want to sell them a new one." It was one of
those classic high-pressure pitches. In the end Stanley refused
to make service information available.

I cannot rate the quality of their products but anyone disturbed
by "throw-away" products might wish to ask about getting service
if something goes on the fritz.

My previous house had a 1/2 hp Stanley chain drive and it was about 7 years old
when I left. It always worked well and I had no problems with it. I recently
put the same model in my current home. Installation was straightforward at
it works fine.

Me too.

I saw the same article. Not only was it rated a best buy, but
it also was at the top of their ratings.

Have you found this model? I have not looked many places
yet, but where I did look had a different Stanley model.

My question:
I already have 1 garage opener, a Sears. I am interested in
buying another and am considering a Stanley 3500 (if I can
find one) because of Consumers Reports good rating. I would
like to have 2 garage door opener transmitters which could
each open either of my 2 garage doors. Do these dual control
transmitters exist? If so, where can I locate one? Are they
available separately or only with an opener. The system that
I use must have security code capability on the transmitter/receiver.
The opener that I currently have does have this. Does Stanley
make a dual controller? Sears?

Please respond via e-mail.

Thank in advance!

I would be interested in this as well. I have a related need - My parents
and two of my brothers all have Genie Garage Door Openers. Because of this
they can use the same security codes and therefore when visiting each other
can open each others' garage doors with the same remote...kind of handy. I
would like to not buck the family trend. But seeing how Consumers Reports
rated the Stanley so highly and the fact that in my area I can buy the Stanley
for a much cheaper price it would be nice to get the Stanley. Is it possible
as the above requester asks to access different brand garage door openers with
a single remote (a univeral garage door remote?)? Is there any correspondence
between the security code systems of different brands and how would you figure
it out?

By the way my brothers' Genie Garage Door Openers have dual controllers (ie
they have two buttons) for opening their two garage doors, but both of their
garage doors have Genies.

Two button remote controls exist. I know Aaron Garage Doors in San Jose has
them. The model I was looking at has individually set security codes for the
two channels. My friend bought one to operate a single garage door and the
security gate of his townhouse complex.

I forgot who the manufacturer was, or if there are multiple vendors. We were
strictly looking to match existing base units.

My door opener remote unit simply replaces the 'door bell' type button.
It is a Sears remote, and would appear to work on other openers as well.
It relies on the voltage coming across the two wires to the button to
power the receiver. When the receiver gets a signal from the transmitter,
it closes a relay (shorting its power supply) to open or close the door.

That's easy. You can set your code with a plurality of DIP
switches. (Check inside the transmitter. Some Stanleys have
hardwired switches, but the result is the same.) Simply switch one
OFF or open, and install an external switch in parallel. Set door
A with that bit open and door B with that bit closed; the rest of
the switches the same.

Of course you have to match transmitter frequencies, which probably
means the same brand.
