In particular, my well supplies slightly hard, slightly iron-laden
(ironic?) water (specifically, around 1 ppm). My wife & I dislike the
feel of soft water, so we have ruled out a water softener.
(Apparently, as a side effect, they would eliminate the iron). The
two other options I have seen are (1) a "brim" filter, apparently a
manganese catalyst which the water is circulated through; the iron
precipitates out and (2) a manganese greensand filter which functions
similarly except that it costs a lot more, and requires chemicals to
be routinely added, (and is also effective when water has a lot of
iron).
Since our iron content is relatively low (but bad enough to stain
laundry etc) we were considering getting the manganese brim filter.
Does anyone have experience with this model? Although no chemicals
have to be routinely added, the catalyst does need to be replaced. Is
the catalyst truly a catalyst, or can some of it leach into the water?
Do the units work well?
Any info anyone might have would be greatly appreciated.
