hollow or solid composite decking?

My husband and I are planning to use composite decking materials when
we have our decks built. From the samples we've looked at, we like
the look of the WeatherBest product (their premium line, in "pacific
cedar"). It is available both as solid decking (for 16in on center)
as well as hollow decking (for 24in on center). Since our decks are
not yet built, we could go with either kinds of boards.

Can anyone explain the advantages of solid over hollow composite
decking or vice versa (whether in Weatherbest or another brand)? Is
one more economical than the other (apart from the fact that 24in on
center means fewer structural joists for the hollow boards)? Is one
more durable and/or easier to work with than the other? Our decks
will be at least 6 feet off the ground (to connect with the doors on
the house), and we'd like to use a hidden fastener system. Does the
height and/or fastener system make a difference?

Thank you,

Dorothy Mullin

Hollow allows for less support??? Seems backwards.

I like solid because I've seen holes punched into hollow and frequently
seen ripples on the surface of hollow material decks.

Height, no (that affects only how the substructure is supported).

Hidden fasteners add some complexity and you must make certain the
decking you choose is supported by hidden fasteners. Some fasteners
work only with specific decking, and it is possible some decking is
available that no hidden fastener will work with.
