after having sat in our new kitchen for several hours waiting for the
telephone man to arrive, I think I've decided we'd like to takle it
first instead of the bathroom. The kitchen is 40 years old, though
they did repaint the cabinets. The appliances are new, and we
wouldn't do a reorganisation. The counter tops seem new, so we'd like
to see if we can get cabinets from Ikea or HD that will fit and reuse
the counter tops on top. How hgard is it to get the counter tops off
without destroying them?

Any comments on the best (has to be available in those basic lines of
ready built cabinets) feature they can't do without oin their new
kitchen? There isan't really a pantry in this place, so I'm thinking
of converting the skinny broom cabinet into one of those pull out
shelving units that are tall and skinny and pull out all at once.

I wouldn't replace good cabinets. Decorative painting techniques will
freshen the look of about any cabinets. If the shelves themselves are ok,
the doors can get new facings, or of course, could be removed altogether.

Seems like you're an obvious candidate for cabinet refacing; new doors etc
on the cabinets.
