Because we are getting ready to paint the walls, we were wondering if
we could just repair these in addition to those where the nail head is
already exposed (instead of having to do them later). Any thoughts on
how to do this or if it's even necessary? Thanks in advance.

A small "mom" moment...I was repairing some drywall last night when my 18 year
old son came in. He asked how I was going to fix the 1 x 2 foot section to the
wall. I said nails. He said..."you nail it in and in the coming years you'll
have the nails showing through like we have in the living room. Use screws and
that won't happen." Even told me what kind of screw to get, altho I can't
remember that at the moment. I will do as he says as these nail places look
terrible in the living room wall. He's still at the age where "mama usually
knows best" but I was proud of him. The tides are changing...

Yup, fix them now.
If you want to try, you can sometimes slit the paper/plaster/paint on
the surface and make an essentially invisible repair, but I usually find
it easier and faster to just do a normal fix and patch up the plaster.
I use a very quick and effective method to fix nail pops. Locate the
head of the nail and use a punch or nail set to seat it down again.
Then put in a screw right above or below the nail so that the edge of
the head of the screw goes down on top of the edge of the head of the
nail. This will hold in the nail.
How you have a dime-sized area to plaster and prime and the screw holds
a lot better than if you had tried to pull the nail to place a screw.
