Note that the unit itself is only part of the issue. Most
of the noise comes from the airflow. The key is to bet a
very low pressure high volume system.

The unit itself is a minor part of the issue. Most important is the
sizing and other details of the supply ducting. For more information,
I recommend "The Master Handbook of Acoustics" by F. Alton Everest. A
portion of the book is devoted to recording studio design.

Last summer we had a new Trane furnace and A/C installed. Both the furnace
and the A/C compressor are dramatically quieter than the 15 year old units
they replaced. You might try posting on alt.hvac to get advice from some
heating & air pros.

You will want to over size your ductwork, blower, and registers.
Then cut the blower speed down. The key is volume not velocity.
