Hi folks- Looking for suggestions for components to assemble a home
theater system. I currently own the following equipment which I want to
use as part of the system: one (1) brand new Sony KV-36FV16 (36" flat,
yee ha, I am psyched!), two (2) sets of Bose AM-5 speakers each of which
come with a woofer. That's it. I know I need a center channel speaker
and a reciever. Not sure about another/separate woofer for 5.1
compliance.
I would appreciate suggestions in the low to mid range in terms of cost.
How do I define low to mid? Let's say for the reciever no more than
$500.
Lastly suggestions for a DVD would also be appreciated very much.
Thanks.

Your best bet is to post this question on alt.home-theater.misc.

My personal preference for a receiver under $500 is anything by Yamaha. I
forget the model number, but they make a 100 watt Dolby Digital/DTS receiver
that lists for $499, the 70 watt speaker for $399 list. Check out
www.onecall.com and www.cnet.com.

As for speakers, most, if not all, home theater enthusiasts will tell you
that Bose speakers are not that great. You can do much better for the same
amount of money. The brands that are usually recommended in that price
range are Paradigm, Energy, PSB, Definitive, etc. If you are serious
about putting together a good home theater, buy a subwoofer and center
channel from one of these companies (listen to the speakers before you buy)
and look to replace the Bose down the line.

You don't need to spend a lot to get a decent DVD player. $250 will get you
all that you need. Look at the models by Toshiba, Sony or Pioneer in that
price range.

There are many aspects of a home theater system that need to be
considered when "designing" it. It can get really complex, REALLY fast!

First, I concur with what's already been said about Bose speakers. As
for your center channel speaker, you ideally want one made by the same
company that makes your main speakers. This is because when sound
travels from left to right (or right to left), you want it to sound
seamless. A mismatched center channel will have a noticibly different
sound, ruining the effect. That being said, you might want to decide on
a new set of front speakers, buy the center channel now, and get the main
speakers later. Surround speakers aren't as important (in my opinion) in
terms of brand or quality, since they're just producing ambient sound.
I'm sure home theater freaks would slap me for saying that, but I think
they're really a secondary consideration.

As for speaker suggestions, a company called Definitive Technology makes
some speakers that are really good for home theater. They're a bipolar
design, which means that sound comes out of them both from the front and
the back of the speaker (there are drivers on both sides of the speaker).
This fills the room with sound much more than "regular" speakers, which
only have drivers in the front of the speaker. I had a pair of their
BP6B speakers, and they were great for movies. You could probably pick
up a pair of used ones and a matching center channel for $500.

As for receivers, there are tons of them out there. I'm partial to
Marantz receivers, but that's just a personal opinion. You need to
determine how much power your speakers need, what features you want (THX
Certification, DTS, Dolby Digital, etc.), and pick one appropriately.
Obviously, the less demanding you are, the cheaper the receiver will be.
For what it's worth, I have a Marantz SR-670 receiver that I'm going to
sell on eBay soon. Contact me via E-mail if you're interested.

As for DVD players, I have a Philips 711, and it's a great player.
Hasn't had any difficulties reading any discs, lots of different output
ports for hookups, and a good clean picture. Places like Circuity City
and Best Buy usually have them for $199.

Hope this helps!

Chris

All advice has been good, so I won't add too much more. For a good,
low-priced speaker setup, consider NHT speakers. Their Super-Zero and
Super-One speakers, coupled with a decent sub and center channel, add up
to a good system for a low price. This setup has received good reviews
from stereo and home theater magazines, and sounds great in my living
room!
