Hello. I'm new here. I'm looking for the best newsgroup for my needs.
I am a craftsperson/welder/carpenter/artist who has recently started
using recycled trash as raw material for assembled pieces. Anyone know
any good Internet sites?

Googling the internet can be frustrating because, on this topic, there
seem to be a lot of sites that are just plain trashy. You know, sites
on filling some kindergarten student's time by shoving trash in her
hands and telling her to make something. I think it's important to
see the best examples of recycled art, not just the cheap educator's
ideas.

I don't want this topic to die, as I am also getting into this
subject. I was already thinking of learning how to post pictures so
that I could talk about "pique assiete," broken mosaic art, which is
frugal because it is made from found and broken china and other found
objects but which I think can look really terrific.

Here is a fine artist I found who is into recycled art:

I know that there are many. It's an exciting field. My plan by
posting before I've finished researching is to keep the topic bumped
and to serve as a reminder to me that I need to post something and
also, I would hope, encourage other people to post on this subject.

On one website you'll find someone who fused AOL disks together to make a
lantern. I imagine the light from that refraction would look very pretty.

Regarding AOL discs, I wanted to make a mosaic out of them but was
unable to figure out how to cut them. They don't shatter when I hit
them with a hammer, and my scissors didn't cut them. Any ideas?

Tin snips or aviation snips. I've never been sure of the difference,
I have both, and I'm pretty sure it was the latter that I used. I once
roughly tried cutting them, and it came out surprisingly clean. The
CD certainly didn't shatter. Wait, I just tried cutting an AOL disk
and it shattered badly. When I tried it some years back, I was using
real music CDs (I'd found a bunch of demos in the garbage, I wish I'd
taken more for the cases) and maybe the AOL disks are manufactured of
cheaper material.
