My HP 832C printer died yesterday. Anyone recoomend a replacement?
Preferably around $100 - 150 - or less. Prefer mono - don't need color.
Just need printer - not all-in-one, but I'll condider anything. USB
connection is ok. Cheap ink?

TIA

If economy is the priority, get a laser printer used off craigslist or
freecycle. Watch our for paper feed problems where it can't pull the paper or
multifeeds pages.

I've been happy with my Brother HL2170W basic laser printer, which has
both USB and wired ethernet connections. It was about $80 or so,
refurbished at Staples. After two years I had to buy a toner cartridge
for $20, which will probably last longer than the smaller one the
printer came with. It even has LINUX drivers.

There are newer equivalents, possibly with wireless connections. I
recommend this printer highly.

I have a Brother 5370 laser, bought in Jan 2010. It cost a bit more
than others because of its built-in duplexing. USB or Ethernet;
wireless version available. Fast, great resolution; low cost per page.

Dunno what the current equivalent is; you may find the same one on
closeout...

If you live near a Fry's they have a Brother laser on sale for $79.99.
Built in duplexing and wireless. Replacement toner cartridges
(after-market) are pretty cheap.

<http://www.frys.com/product/6422132?site=sr:SEARCH:MAIN_RSLT_PG>

As someone else said, Freecycle is a good place for used laser printers.
I got one there. Especially if you can live with just a parallel port as
there are a lot of very good older HP Laserjet printers being discarded.
I use a wireless print server that has a parallel port, I've never
plugged a computer directly into the printer other than to test a USB to
parallel port cable with Windows 7 and Linux (it worked).

Agreed - I am also happy with my Brother 2170W laser printer. I
connect to mine wirelessly and it just works.

The HL-2270DW is $80 at Fry's. I think the difference from the 2170 is
the wireless.

Mine is definitely a W, but it's not wireless. Confused me too. Maybe
it stands for 'wired'. It would be nice if it had a scanner too, but I
have a nice Canon scanner that also does slides. The bad part is that
it won't run under linux, just windows.

Dunno. Here is a link to the Brother product page where it says the
HL-2170W has both wired and wireless support:

http://www.brother-usa.com/printer/modeldetail.aspx?productid=hl2170w#.T6AxvbPOXMw

Good (discontinued) printer either way. When I bought mine, it was
cheaper than buying a replacement drum for my Samsung laser printer.

I bought the bigger (TN360?) Brother cartridge for roughly $20 from some
buy.com entrepreneur. Works fine.

I had an equivalent Samsung. It chewed paper up from Day 1, and when I
finally opened up the replacement toner cartridge I bought when I bought
the printer, it didn't work. Samsung told me the warranty on the
cartridge was only a year. Too bad the original cartridge lasted a
couple of years.

I learned two things: (1) Don't buy a new cartridge until you're pretty
close to needing it. (2) Don't buy Samsung.

Until then I liked Samsung. They provided linux drivers too.

I took my own advice and bought a Brother HL-2270DW yesterday. Fry's was
out of stock, but Best Buy met the Fry's price, knocking $20 off Best
Buy's price, so it was $79.99. I see that Amazon has now dropped the
price to $81.98 with free shipping
<http://www.amazon.com/dp/B00450DVDY>. It's going to be for my
child-unit to take to college next year, while I stick with my Freecycle
HPLJ5MP.

Set it up this morning and it went smoothly. You use a USB or Ethernet
cable to set up the wireless in the printer. One minor annoyance is that
the printer shows up twice in your "Devices and Printers" once for USB
and once for Wireless, but you can delete the USB one if you don't need
it. Windows 7 did not automatically install the printer when the USB
cable was plugged in, it was required to use the setup CD. One strange
thing is that I selected the SSID for the wireless, but it never asked
me for the WPA key, yet it works fine.

I really like the automatic duplexing. The obsolete HL-2170DW does not
have the duplexer. According to Amazon, another advantage of the 2270
over the 2170 is that you can have both wired and wireless Ethernet
active at the same time, which I can see as being useful in some situations.

My first laser printer was an HP Laserjet III which cost about $2000.
But it lasted 20 years.

You have the BB credit card, right? In effect, 2% back on anything you
use it for and more for stuff you buy at BB. You can only spend it at
BB, but that's OK as far as I'm concerned.

I thought it did, but I do so little printing that it really makes no
difference.

Probably still works. There are some Oki dot-matrix printers that were
still going strong at a local auto parts shop a couple of years ago.

You mean the scanner won't run under Linux right? The Brother printers
run under Linux just fine. Just installed the Linux drivers for the
HL-2270DW.

It's ironic about your scanner because I have the opposite issue. I
have an HP scanner that does not work under Windows 7. It's not all
that old either. Apparently if I had the higher version of Windows 7 I
might be able to use XP compatibility mode to get the scanner to work.
However the scanner works just fine under Linux. Linux recognized it,
installed the drivers automatically, and I could scan (a rather
amazing thing for Linux, where it's usually hours of tinkering to get
hardware working!).

I may buy a second one of the HL-2270DW and retire the HPLJ5MP. The HP
toner cartridges for the HP are expensive, and I bought two
remanufactured cartridges from Monoprice, neither of which worked well.

No. I almost never go into Best Buy since they are almost always much
more expensive than other stores for the same item. Even on this
printer, which they also had on sale, they were 25% more expensive than
Fry's (without the price match). My current credit card gives me a flat
1.5% cash back on everything.

The HL-2170W does have wireless:
You might not have even realized it, since there's no antenna and no
control panel that would show it. You have to set up the wireless by
plugging in a computer via USB or Ethernet.

HL-2240: no duplexer, no wireless
HL-2240D duplexer, no wireless
HL-2170W wireless, no duplexer (discontinued)
HL-2270DW duplexer, wireless.

So pretty sure the D stands for duplexer and the W stands for wireless.
I think Brother has actually discontinued everything but the HL-2270DW.

I am rather amazed that a 600dpi laser printer with wireless and a
duplexer can be sold at a street price of $80. This means that Brother
is probably wholesaling it to the retailers for under $60. And it's not
like ink jet printers where you're constantly running out to buy the
world's most expensive liquid, so making up the cost by selling supplies
is not going to happen.

Their sale prices are frequently very good, as are some of the open box
prices. I give them extra points because they're across the street;
Fry's is a 25-mile round trip.

I really hate the way the CC companies are changing the stuff they
rebate 5% on every quarter. Costco gives 3% back on gas all the time,
which is nice. This quarter Chase Freedom is giving 5% back on
groceries, which is useful.

Canon stuff never runs under linux. Real pain, because the scanner was
the only reasonably-priced one that did 2.25^2 slides and my Canon
camera is the only one I found with the features I want. It's not a
serious problem since I can pass the scans to my linux machine and
upload photos from the SD card, but it's the principle of the thing :-(

I bought the Brother cartridge from buy.com. So far, so good. The
yellow light on the printer had been blinking for some time, and I
figured I better buy a new cartridge in case the old one gave out while
I was printing tax forms. I was psychic!

I get 4% back on gas with the Costco Business Amex. I used to get 2%
back on everything with the Schwab Visa, but they discontinued it. Now
the best I could do was 1.5%.

I never had problems with my Canon scanner, I gues it's an LIDE-20.

And I bought a Canon camera to replace the 2MP hand me down camera I was
using, my usual technique of putting things off until I finally decided to
deal with it, at which point whatever was cheapest in the flyer that week
won.

The previous camera hadn't come to me with a cable, so I was already
moving the card from the camera to the computer, so I just didn't give it
any thought.

It did not take long to use up the toner in the "starter" cartridge. Of
course it ran out in the middle of a print job I was doing for the high
school band.

Fry's wanted $68 for a Brother cartridge. Cartridge World wanted $42 for
a refilled cartridge. So I finished the print job on my old HP Laserjet
(doing the duplexing manually) and ordered toner from
<http://www.inkowl.com/>. The toner kit is $12
<http://www.inkowl.com/?p=product&product=3219>. You also have to
convert the starter cartridge into a a normal cartridge with a "flag
gear kit" <http://www.inkowl.com/?p=product&product=3218>. The "flag
gear" indicates to the printer that the cartridge is full or empty. You
only install the flag gear kit once. Then, each time you refill the
cartridge you have to reposition the flag gear which involves removing
two screws and repositioning the gear.

Installing the flag gear kit is pretty simple (once I realized that the
toner cartridge comes out of the printer still inserted in some sort of
carrier that you have to eject it from). The tough part is removing the
plastic plug on the cartridge. The kit includes some metal tape to seal
up the hole if you damage the plug beyond use. I would have preferred a
replacement plug, and some eBay sellers of refill kits do include a new
plug so next time I may order from them

I don't do much printing, so it took me a few years to finish the
original toner on my Brother HL2170W. I ordered the bigger cartridge
from one of the buy.com independent sellers for $21 or so. Looks like
the original, works fine. Probably not as friendly to the environment
as refilling toner, but I can take the old cartridge to Staples for some
sort of credit.

There's a guy who refills cartridges down the street, but he wanted
something like $35 or $40.
