I have complained to Altopia.com, the news server this individual is using. Please join me and copy
just one of his messages, showing full headers, to ab...@altopia.com What I wrote was:

Dear Altopia:
Someone posting from your news server is absolutely flooding USENET with spam, posting scores of
paranoid rantings to to hundreds of groups on a daily basis.

Strangers in the street have. recognized me on sight many times, and shown
awareness of the current thread of abuse. To. give you one example, in 1992
I was seriously ill, and a manager. at work somewhat humorously said that
"it wasn't fair" that people were bullying me. A few days later,. I attended
for the first time. a clinic in London as an outpatient, and on my way out
was accosted. by someone who asked if "they had paid my fare", with emphasis
on the word "fare". He repeated the. word several times in this different
context; that they should have. paid my "fare", each time emphasizing the
word (usual paranoid ranting snipped)

Please take action on this individual, it is making USENET unbearable.

Thank you,

I had a very intelligent friend who was convinced that the CIA
monitored his thoughts and actions. Any attempt to silence him was taken
a validation of his claims. When he was broke I would let him stay at my
place with the condition that we would not about the plot. He would
sometimes say "I see they got to you, also" and would leave. He usually
was able ( and still is) to find menial jobs. He would always repay any
borrowed money usually mailing a money order with a general delivery
address and a cryptic explanation of why he was in that area. Not only
would he repay money but he estimated to cost of food he had eaten
,phone calls and even gas.
He was very organized. He formed a political action committee and
when he left California he hitch hiked east but stopped in Sacramento to
file papers to dissolve the PAC.

Corse they can.

Looks like it, although there isnt just that one simple category anymore.

> Which is kind of sad, really, but what can you do?

Yep, the loonys do prefer to not be kept in locked wards anymore.

Its arguable whether the massive cost of their impact on everyone else is worth it tho.

> The guy is already aware of the possibility and has discounted it even though it's most likely the truth.

Absolutely certain to be the truth.

If MI5 was really after him, even the most incompetant
organisation would have executed him by now.

> Getting back on a practical level, his Usenet abuse is not likely to be stopped by conventional means.

A bullet in the back of his neck would certainly stop him.

> To him (within his delusion), it's probably critically important to get the word out on Usenet,

Harder to say whether its actually critically important or
whether he hasnt got anything better to be obsessed about.

> so his motivation is stronger than that of a regular spammer,

True.

> and he appears to be relatively smart as well.

Not that smart, he hasnt managed to work out how to avoid some
news servers flushing his shit where it belongs. I dont see any of
his shit at all, because my news server flushed it where it belongs.

I in fact know another not quite so obsessed, but equally
loony, who actually rang me from the loony bin quite literally
one time. Whats quite striking is how coherent he can be,
while simultaneously esposing the most utterly bizarre stuff.

i have a brother who is a diagnosed paranoid schizophrenic. i think the
schizophrenic part requires that you hear voices and speak to imaginary
people. my brother has several of these "friends", and i think the reason
he won't take his meds is because they go away when he does and he misses
them.

get out. it's a pita, but who's he really hurting?

You might be more accurate that you know. All of the direct to the
public pharmaceutical advertising always shows that if you take
"zelarim" the sun will shine, cute butterflies will appear, birds will
chirp and everything will be happy.

I have 2 friends who have taken prescription mind altering drugs and a
friend who is a doctor in that field and they all say that in many cases
the symptoms go away but unlike all of the cute happy stuff from the
marketing you essentially become "walking dead". So people choose not
to take the drugs because of that bad effect.

that was also one of his complaints, but i think the doctors just had him on
too high a dose. allopathic doctors start high and work down. i'm trying
to convince him to find a d.o. who will start low and work up.

You're wrong, not all of them get that effect.

Some of them just decide that they are Napoleon etc.

The technical term for that is 'pathetically inadequate sample'

Nope, just the ones he posts using.

You can make the same claim about graffiti and spam.

Mindlessly superficial.

Plenty of loonys do take the drugs because it gets rid of the bad effects they dont like.

Good luck with that. From what I understand this person has been
posting these since Al Gore invented the internet. And you'll note
the addresses are coming from multiple sites now.

Interesting, I regularly use two different news servers, but I have
never seen any of the posts being discussed. I didn't know who the OP
was talking about 'taking down'.

From another forum:

******pasted******

The MI5 poster: His name is Mike Corley, he is an IT professional but alas
he has mental health issues. Here are some details about Mike Corley. He
lives in London, UK. He first began his postings to usenet, BBS, and forums
in 1995, unsurprisingly first to alt.conspiracy.

He has his own website: http://www.five.org.uk/

"There have been numerous newspaper articles and online thesis about Mike's
postings, this is a BBC article on the subject:"
http://www.bbc.co.uk/dna/h2g2/alabaster/A164404

"And amongst many other covers of the Mike Corley phenomenon there has been
a modern opera about this usenet legend:"
http://www.thecorleyconspiracy.com/

The problem is amplified by posters who reply to Mike's X-post floods
without snipping, and without removing the crossposts. But also Mike Corley
sets "follow-up" groups to his MI5 posts, this is where he hasn't actually
posted to a specific group but it's listed as "follow-up" in the crossposts,
the users who reply, their posts show up in groups that Mike wants flooded.
Mike Corley has set uk.misc as follow-up to all his posts, (which I've
removed)it gets flooded with the replies, and of course the X-posting. Mike
Corley has been doing this since 1995, and he knows what he is doing, he
avoids killfiles/plonk/block by morphing and using pay-as-you-go dial-up.
Filters rarely have an effect as in this example, if you set the criteria as
"MI_5", then the flood morphs to "MIfive" or whatever. He doesn't post via
google despite the headers, nor are the email addies valid, he dances
between proxy servers such as altopia etc, filtering has no effect. The
simple rule with Mike Corley floods is to ignore and not to reply. Mike will
take his medication and eventually stop.....until the next time. But if
users do the foolish and reply/x-post/fail-to-snip, then Mike Corley sticks
around. So don't spam your pointless replies across dozens of groups.
