Does anybody make a 25+CF fridge with French doors, freezer at the
bottom and NO WATER CONNECTION NECESSARY? I don't want an icemaker or
water dispenser -- just the space that both would use. Even when I
specify NONE in various search functions, I end up with one or both.
I'm tired of looking...

WTF?

Yes, LG and Whirlpool. My freezer portion of my Whirlpool died back in
August. While waiting for the repairman to show up the next day I checked
online for French door, bottom freezer refrigerators without ice maker or
water. I could find no available USA refrigerators without the ice maker
but could find them without water dispensers. Both brands I looked at were
the 25 c.f. models.

Fortunately, my freezer was a $200 repair but I did tell the repair guy I
had been looking at new 'fridges in case he said mine was ready for the
landfill. He said if I ever wanted to replace to go with the Whirlpool
and forget the LG. Parts were hard to get and they broke down frequently
because of a design flaw. A design flaw LG was aware of but unwilling to
correct.

P.S. My present Whirlpool had an ice maker but it was never hooked up.
When I had the freezer repaired in this top freezer model the repairman
removed it at my request.

Home Depot has Whirlpools... I wonder if you can just ask them to NOT
hook it up before it's delivered...

That's where I found the one I *thought* I was going to have to buy. I had
searched online and the one I wanted was in stock at H.D. and the price in
the store was around $200 cheaper than the advertised online price.

But yes, you can request them not hook up the ice maker. When my repaired
Whirlpool was and delivered back in the Dark Ages I didn't even have a water
line run so not hooking it up was no problem.

The automatic ice maker is the weakest element on a refrigerator and not
hooking it up will save you money not having to have it repaired. Plus
the savings of not buying water filters for it every 30, 60, or 90 days.

I've got water faucets and ice cube trays. I don't think I made any
ice last summer, but I could be wrong.

I didn't break it! It was doing that before I broke it... er...

I've been having a similar problem finding a refrigerator
with the freezer on TOP and at least 23 cu. ft.

The models I've found are few and don't even have the few
features of my current GE top-freezer fridge. The door shelves
are too small to put a gallon jug and the vegetable bins are
so small I'd be hard-pressed to fit a bag of potatoes in them.

No shelf in the freezer section for ice cube trays either. I
rarely make ice, but use the shelf for a quarter sheet pan when
freezing cookie dough or cupcakes.

While my current fridge is making noises like a motorboat,
I ended up finding after years of searching a compact size
freezer (5.9 cu. ft.) with a small footprint that is at least
keeping my ice cream from melting while I continue to search
for the elusive top-freezer refrigerator.

I've had two Whirlpools, both of which had numerous problems,
so anything by that company is out of contention.

It seems there are lots of options for cheaply made, smaller
refrigerators and lots of mega-fridges with loads of (mostly
useless, IMO) features for thousands of dollars, but not much
in the mid-range in size or features.

Why does it seem that the manufacturers are not listening to
the consumer when they design these things?

Nyssa, who is wondering what will happen when the current
motor-boating fridge finally gasps its last with no acceptable
replacement in sight

Same here and I find it no hardship to fill up those ice trays. But I haven't
made any ice in about 5 months but probably will once summer arrives.

I know Home Depot and Lowe's offer the top freezer models but I don't know
if those shown have the features you want. IF and WHEN my refrigerator
does die I've decided it's bottom freezer for me. That squatting and/or
bending to find something on the bottom shelf pushed to the back is killing
my knees.

Think about it. You're in your refrigerator many more times a day than you
are in your freezer.

Good luck in your search!!

We have a Whirlpool refigerator with an ice maker. We use a lot of
ice, so the ice maker is a great convenience - I hate dealing with ice
cube trays. The water supply nozzle that fills the ice maker freezes
up about 3-4 times a year. It is a simple job to take it out to unclog
it - loosen three screws and unplug an electrical connector. The
upside is that it also forces us to clean out/organize the freezer
compartment on a regular basis.

Thanks! I think I'm going to need it.

A friend said that she read somewhere that the trend is
heading back to freezer-on-top refrigerators, and maybe
if I can keep what I have running a bit longer the newer
top freezer models might start hitting the market in time
for me to avoid having a warm refrigerator.

I've tried Lowes, Home Depot, a sort-of-local appliance
store, and even a big Sears Outlet in the Big City to
no avail. All small models or the one I found that had
a large price but minimal storage features (including the
door shelves that weren't deep enough for a gallon of
milk or water).

So I'll keep my fingers crossed that Old Faithful (but noisy)
keeps chugging along until the trend catches up to my
needs.
