Anyone have any particular mattress they feel is the best?

I am still using the same one from my first apartment which was the cheapest
one at Mattress Discounters at the time. It's too soft and sags.

There seems to be too many choices to choose from: Sealy, Serta, Lindsay
Wagner, etc.

What do you use and like? What furniture/mattress store do you recommend?
(I'm in MD/DC/VA.)

Thanks for any help.

Comfortaire or Select Comfort. We'll never sleep on a regular mattress
again. We've had our Comfortaire for just about 5 years now and it was one
of the best investments we've ever made.

I have a Simmons Pure Harmony, and it's been just that. I think it's a
model that can be kind of pricey, but I managed to get a really good deal on
mine, at Mattress Discounters coincidentally. The store was in a strip of
mattress places, and I was able to get quotes and go back and forth between
the stores to see who would give me the best deal....

Firm mattresses will last longer, but they may be uncomfortable for some
people to sleep on. I got a mattress some years ago that proved too firm
for me by itself, one of the Sealy Posturepedics, but a foam pad made it
just right, and it doesn't show any signs of wear even now.

No matter who you go with, make sure you read the fine print on their
return policy. Choosing a mattress is quite personal, and there's
nothing like trial and error. Make sure the store you buy from offers
a good return policy. Consider all the implications of the policy and
make sure you can live with it should you need to, because it is quite
likely you will end up returning the first mattress you choose, from
what I've heard and experienced.

We bought a mattress recently and were not happy with it. The store's
policy accepted returns after 30 days. We waited out the 30 days (not
much sleep, by then we were both grouchy and miserable, but the 30 day
adjustment period seemed like a reasonable clause to us). After the
adjustment period, they would exchange for a mattress of equal or
greater value, less shipping and restocking fees (again, that seemed
reasonable to us).

Unfortunately, there was only one other mattress of same price to
choose from, and we didn't like that one at all. The next higher
mattress was significantly higher priced - and out of our budget. If
we wanted a mattress of lesser value, we could get a store credit. So
this is what happened - we ended up choosing a mattress of less value
and now have a store credit of a couple hundred dollars that we will
probably never use. I'm not complaining *too* much... this second
mattress is heavenly and we are very happy with it... but if I had
read the fine print about store credit before I bought, I might've
done things differently.

Can't suggest a brand - I bought the el cheapo set from a local store
- but I can warn you, and others off a chain store (if they're in your
area.) The chain may only be in CA, not sure, but they tipped they're
hand and revealed what a racist bunch of s.o.b.s own it.

Sit'N'Sleep has been around in CA for quite a few years now. Always
thought their advertising was kinda funny, positive, and made a good
impression for the company. Then they started running Mexican language
commercials on NON-Mexican channels late last year (AFTER our
Governator kept his promise and put the kibash on illegals getting
driver's liscenses....) First time I saw one of these ads, I thought
it was funny - 'Oops, somebody really screwed up and put their
commercial on the wrong station!' THEN they saturated the Sci-Fi
Channel with these glaring, abrasive ads, and I realized it was no
mistake.

I'm no expert on advertising, but most people these days realize that
television advertising is *expensive*, and advertising dollars,
particularly in this economy, are not to be squandered. You pick your
market *carefully*. So I did some research, to find out where the
Sci-Fi Channel measured up re attracting a Mexican demographic.
Answer: it *doesn't*. Not even a blip on the radar of 'most popular
channels viewed by hispanics'. And yet Sit'N'Sleep was *saturating*
this channel with their Mexican-language-only commercials...

I believe, as do many others I've spoken to about this and explained
about advertising and demographics, that it was an 'in your face,
gringo!' response to the *major* backlash against Mexican illegals
we're seeing here in CA. It made NO sense from a business standpoint,
as the channel is not popular with Mexicans as a general rule, and
certainly not those that don't speak/understand English! We started
passing out flyers to friends and people we met, explaining it, and
providing email addresses, phone numbers, etc. to the channel, to the
cable provider, and to major manufacturers of mattresses that are
featured prominently in the commercials. The latter were advised that
we would NOT be purchasing any of their products as long as these
racist commercials were airing, and requesting that they bring
pressure on this company to remove them.

Haven't seen any Mex language ads for a month or so now, so hopefully
this crappy racist company has 'got the message'. I KNOW they got
plenty of nasty calls and letters!!! I would NEVER buy from them now
in any case, knowing their 'feelings' about us 'evil gringos'.

Sealy Posturepedic, extra firm.

Some people like a softer bed; so YMMV.

Agreed- I'm coming up on year 15 for mine, and it is only now starting to
lose the 'new mattress' feel. (and I am no lightweight.) Best 3-4 hundred
I ever spent- back problems went way down. If I ever manage to buy a house
where I have room for a bigger bed, I'll probably buy another Sealy, and put
this one in the guest room.

After suffering a ruptured disk in my back, I decided to redesign my
bed, which tormented me for years. I constructed a frame with legs
from 4x4 pine (6 legs - 2 in the center, 2 at each end) 3 2x4s (one
center, one at each end) and firring strips, running the length of the
bed, as the main platform. I bolted these together and bought the best
high density foam the local foam company had, for about $80 (queen
size), So, for well under $200. I have a bed that doesn't shake when
my wife rolls over. It doesn't sag and hurt my back. And after 4 years
I still love it.

Best advice, IMHO: Build what you need. It just doesn't exist in
greedworld.

Have no idea what's best, but I just got a firm Seally. No more of
those el cheapos!
Might be a good idea, tho, to get the same size so your fitted sheets
& headboard fit. I bought my new mattress one size larger, about 6
inches, now my fitted sheets don't fit. I know it's a stretch..but
anybody ever heard of stretching sheets.....??

My wife and I bought a Sealy firm mattress. We have had it for a
couple years. It has worked great. We have 5 kids now. kidding...
but the Sealy is a great mattress very comfortable and no back
problems.. my back used to ache. the only thing is if you sleep on
your side the firm mattress might bother your shoulders. This can
probably be rememdied by a foam pad. In my opinion if you get the
firm mattress then you can always get a foam pad to make it more soft
to add the pillowsoft tough to it.

A spring has started to come out of the bottom so we are going to see
if they will replace it for us. (I know wish us luck) They have a 10
year warranty but I don't remember what the fine print said so I will
have to look at the receipt. Mattress Firm sold us ours for a little
over 800.00. Best money ever spent.

Far, far more frugal to simply get a slab of industrial grade foam. Check
the Yellow Pages for under Mattresses. Well over half the cost of a regular
mattress is profit for the retailer.

Try the offerings at Sam's Cub and Costco . Get them off the shelf an
lay on them . If you like them buy them . At least at these places
you won't be a victim of high pressure sales and you know you can
return them for a full refund ( policy is specified at the store so
check it ) if you some like it .

Add a 3 inch 4 lb to 5lb density memory foam pad topper to industrial
foam and get the equivalent of a $$$$ Tempurpedic .

I just got a mattress I love from memoryfoam.com. I got several layers
of foam and it is so comfy and supportive. It is a combination of 2
ILD ( densities of latex) 35 and 28 or something and a 3 inch sensus
memory foam layer on top with a quiltflex pad to top it all off. This
is good quality memory foam- better than the stuff sold at Bed,bath
and beyond and costco. I originally just bought the memory foam topper
but I still got achy from the hard mattress underneath. THe quiltflex
is a very thin top layer that looks like it wouldn't do a thing but it
is very soft. I have lots of disc/nerve problems and this combo is the
best I found. Good luck. You can email the site and they will
recommend a combination of latex for your situation. Good luck.

Good point. There is no frugal excuse to buy name brand mattresses.

As people smarten up, they will do what you did...go to good quality foam
and shun the name brand mattress racket. Buh-bye you Serta counting sheep!!!
