I have been searching high and low for resources on listings of
specific marketing and advertising gimmicks, but to no avail. For
instance a few months ago, driving along a busy street an eyesore
staring at me and every other driver on the road appeared. It was a
huge mound of dirt with several vehicles buried and semi-buried amongst
a large pile of dirt and sand. The tag-line for the gimmick was "bury
the competition" and it was done by an automotive dealer. Working for
a newspaper, I am looking for just such successful ideas, to approach
respective clients. I am looking to hear about ideas that were done in
different markets and whether or not they were successful and such. If
anyone has any ideas, or has heard of something like this, I would
appreciate it very much. Furthermore, if anyone is aware of a site
dediated and/or including the above information, that too would be an
asset.
(Feel free to e-mail me as well.)

Look up the Veck family from Baseball. They are probably the
unlimate promoters, and masters of the gimmick.
