Beware Hawaii Musicians don't trust the general manager of Fox and
Hounds (Nash). Below is an e-mail I received:

To all you hard working musicians out there...

I'm sending this to all forty? fifty? of you just as a heads up. It's
an old old story for some of you I'm sure, but I can't stand it
anymore.

Fox and Hounds in Kahala has done it again. The GM, Nash, has finally
managed to piss off the nicest (and hardest working) people in the
blues world and on top of that - what should be offensive to ALL of us
-

they've refused to pay a musician his agreed upon price, AFTER his
performance.

The usual puffed up "I've opened this many clubs and never paid more
than X dollars" notwithstanding, Nash is a punk and an asshole. He
doesn't value musicians at all and doesn't bother to hide it. He
thinks his insulting pay scale is a favor to us. He obviously thinks
his bar will survive without musicians who care.

Help me show him he's wrong. He's done this before to bands at
Snapper's and he's doing it again. Nash doesn't deserve our hard work,
nor does he deserve any more money from anyone who thinks he supports
music in this town, or goes to his restaurant/bar thinking they are in
a place that does. He deserves what he gets, and I want to make sure
he gets as close to zero dollars as possible.

I know it sounds useless, some of you have been playing in this town a
long time, but it's never too late to ask. Don't play at Fox and
Hounds. Don't refer him to anyone you know who plays music of any
kind, and vice versa. Don't patronize that establishment, and
discourage all those you know who do. Tell the jazz, hawaiian, rock,
blues, funk, acoustic bands that you know. Tell your friends, your
colleagues, anyone who asks.

Thanks for reading.

Yo Mark , thanks for the info...I will pass this to others I know, All
of us have been screwed at one time or another by some asshole selling
$6 beers! Unfortunately musician "unions" have never been very
helpful with this stuff...and there always seems to be guys willing to
play for "exposure" and no money, ..."Battle of the Bands" deals are
also a sleezy way to get people to play for free...screw that too! We
will definitely boycott Fox & Hounds!

Peace

Hi Mark ---

Ahhh, Nash...

Yes, I have my own tale to tell. While playing there with John Helm
last year, Nash actually fired us in the middle of a Saturday night
gig. And refused to pay us for being there for a few hours that
evening. He was drunk, and got into a "fuck you - no fuck you!"
yelling match with John in the middle of the bar - nice impression
that gives your patrons of an owner! "And take your no-money friends
with you!" he concluded...

All (apparently) because he didn't think we deserved to be paid if we
called up someone from the audience to sing a song or two...said we
were lazy... I'm still a little outta the loop, cuz it all started
with him and John while I was elsewhere. Guess Nash just doesn't get
that this is what Hawaii (and live music in little clubs) is all
about...

Anyway, no problem for me to avoid! The place has no soul, and seems
to be a last ditch hideout for all the Kahala divorcee crowd...kinda
scary...

Sorry for your latest experience...

Thanks for the notice, mark. I'll stand behind it because we musicians
have to stick together. That's what the Union is for also. There are
minimum standards that working musicians should get. We can't undercut
each other just to get a gig. We can't let club owners/managers take
advantage of our love for music and willingness to play. Don't
compromise integrity for a few dollars, it ends up hurting ALL of us
in the long run. We can make the clubs pay more by not accepting gigs
that pay less. Pass it on....this is important for all of our
survival.

Mark,

I'm SO glad someone has finally had the guts and energy to send an
email like this. I think I delt with this guy at snapper's but it
doesn't matter, I've dealt with a hundred like him. I'm not there in
the flesh but I'm with you in spirit. Good luck with this. I hope
you all put the squeeze on this guy.

hey mark,

i had the same thing happen to me when he took over that place from
troy. he wanted to give us shit bread and said if we don't take it
someone else will and someone else did----over and over. it is time
for EVERBODY to wake the heck up and don't work for cheap bread. we
can only shoot ourselves in the foot so often. AND we only have
ourselves to blame. thanks for spreading the word on these cats.

Hear ! Hear! I will do my best to spread the word around too, Marky
Mark. It could work..... as long as all musicians, ALL MUSICIANS....
come together and make this our musical community statement to not
frequent or work in that establishment. The only way he can be hurt is
for all musicians to work elsewhere. We should all start demanding pay
in advance for exactly the reasons above. Not much we can do after the
fact...we can't "unplay"

I'm down with whatever sanctions we, as a group, can come up with.
I've been on to Nash for a long time. If the only gigs around are
for chumpchange, I'm for staying home with a good book.
